I have a Nikon D50 and a 70 - 300 lens and am thinking of buying a Kenko Pro 1.4 x multiplier, will I still be able to use the autofocus and exposure features on my camera while using the teleconverter?

That depends on the specific lens and the specific teleconverter. Best bet is to go to the Kenko site and see what Nikon lens will fit. Even though the teleconverter will physically fit the lens does not mean it will work. Generally, most of the newer nikon lens will fit on the Kenko or Tamron teleconverters.

But, you can actually damage a lens by trying to connect it with an adapter not meant for it. If you look at the end of your lens, you will see little pins. Those pins perform functions of the lens and match it to the camera. In this case, it would have to match the adapter's pin arrangement which in turn have to match the camera. That's why it gets complicated. Not even all Nikon adapters will fit all Nikon lens.

If the Kenko site does not list you lens, go to a good camera store that carries both Nikon and Kenko and see if they know. If not, as them to mount a store 70-300 lens to the adapater. If they won't....don't buy it.

That depends on the lens. If it is a prosumer lens then no. An f/stop of 6.3 or better is generally required to allow enough light for autofocus to work. Which means if the lens is slower than 4.5 it won't AF with the 1.4x converter.
