If you just want the avi files try these two free programs. (I assume you have Windows)
You can also use WinRAR to compress the file into more manageable pieces. You can choose the maximum size for each piece.

Use your burner software (eg, Nero) to make a vcd, it will split it into 2 cd's and will be playable on just about any dvd player.
