Jer 8:8 " 'How can you say, "We are wise,
for we have the law of the LORD,"
when actually the lying pen of the scribes
has handled it falsely? (NIV)

What do you think?

First of all, the Bible did not exist when Jeremiah was around. To put the Bible in the question shows you are biased or unfactual. Second, Jeremiah exposed the problem and divine authority was re-established. Third, God will punish all who do evil and chastises even those he loves. This does not demonstrate the Bible is false.

Comparing the Bible and Qur'aan:

FACT: IT (the Qur'aan) CAME INTO EXISTENCE CENTURIES AFTER THE BIBLE AND TORA. People who believe in it seem to think a counterfeit comes before the original. Islamic believers cannot validate the claim that the Bible is the counterfeit because the Bible's existence preceded the Qur'aan.

FACT: THE QUR'AAN TESTIFIES ABOUT ONE TRUE GOD (ALLAH) AND HIS PROPHETS. These truths were in the Bible and Torah long before the Qur'aan. This fact reveals that the Qur'aan is not the first writtings about God and his prophets and suggests that the Qur'aan is not authentic but a forgery.

FACT: IT WAS WRITTEN BY THE ASSOCIATES OF MUHAMMAD (pbuh). Muhammad could not read nor write. Therefore, Muhammad could not verify the validity of the holy book.

FACT: THE QUR'AAN's EXISTENCE WAS AFTER THE TECHNOLOGY OF WRITTING WAS INVENTED. Believer's of the Qur'aan and Islam think the errors in the Bible prove it is not the Word of Allah. Nothing is further from the truth. The technology of writing didn't exist in the time when stories of salvation history were unfolding. So, naturally there are errors since the oral tradition existed before the invention of writing.

The Bible is not 100% accurate but, there are some things to take into consideration before declaring the Bible an invalid source to believe in. You ask a lot of good questions.

There are some problems with the Bible and errors. Please remember, the Old Testament was passed down by oral tradition before the technology of writing was available. Compared to the Quran which existed long after the technology for writing was invented. So, yes there are errors.

Secondly, there are different ways to interpret based upon the "literary forms" of writers. Depending whether it is in a historical context, prophetic, poetry, or some other type of literary form. I believe Jesus Christ IS THE WORD of God. The Bible is written by people inspired by God.

If you took a Bible course and discovered what SCRIPTURAL TYPOLOGY is you would be amazed. If you knew what SALVATION HISTORY was in the Bible you would understand. If you recognized DIVINE AUTHORITY you would know that there has to be someone in authority to reveal the "secret" truths God has given. If you research all those phrases you will begin a journey of discovery that will last a life time.

We have a saying in Catholicism: the New Testament is hidden in the Old and the Old is revealed in the New. There are many mysteries contained in the Bible that I have been amazed at discovering for the past 20 years and there is a whole lot more. St. Jerome said: Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ. The whole Bible is about our SALVATION: Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ fulfilled over 300 prophesies in the Old Testament about the Messiah you can discover 50 of them in cd's IT IS WRITTEN.

WHEN YOU HAVE BEGUN TO DISCOVER THESE THINGS YOU WILL KNOW IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE BEEN WRITTEN BY MAN. Jesus (a historical figure along with others in the Bible that are not fictitional characters) by fulfilling just 50 prophesies makes the odds of doing that 10X135 power! An astronomical figure that could not have been achieved by human means.

The thing that might shock you and others is that SATAN used scripture to tempt Jesus. So, too Satan will use scripture to trip us up from following the true faith. This is why there has to be DIVINE AUTHORITY that passes from the Old Testament to APOSTOLIC SUCCESSION in the New Testament. This is why someone cannot Authoritatively pick up a Bible and correctly interpret it nor can there be millions of interpretors to HOLY SCRIPTURE. There can only be one!

You need to read the other verses around that verse, In the Aramaic, It says that the lying pen of the scribes has made it for falsehood. Jeremiah is not saying that the law is false, but that people has try to make it false, Remember the law was not written by pen, if you are referring to the 10 commandments, They were written by the finger of God.

You have misread and misunderstood Jeremiah and who he was. He was for social justice as this was a hard time in the history of the Jews who had turned away from God's laws and the high priests were not much better as they took payola. Jeremiah was criticizing the high priest who deliberately misinterputed the laws.

As morita senpai mentioned, Jeremiah was referring to their false teachings. Jeremiah is here quoting God who goes on to say in verse 9: "they have rejected the very word of God and what wisdom do they have?" Clearly, God did not feel his word was corrupted. The nation of Israel was corrupted – which is why God would send them off into captivity in Babylon.

Read verse 9 on that. He didn't say it was corrupted. Its the men who are corrupted. Looks to me that these men was not keeping the law. You have to read on.

That is why God in his love and mercy sent the people prophets, as well as his own beloved Son, in order to save them from such deceptive distortions and human traditions. As one source states in reference to Jeremiah 8:8:

The words are not to be limited in their reference to the efforts of the false prophets, who spread their delusive prophecies by means of writings: they refer equally to the work of the priests, whose duty it was to train the people in the law, and who, by false teaching as to its demands, led the people astray, seduced them from the way of truth, and deceived them as to the future. The labours both of the false prophets and of the wicked priests consisted not merely in authorship, in composing and circulating writings, but to a very great extent in the oral teaching of the people, partly by prophetic announcements, partly by instruction in the law; only in so far as it was necessary was it their duty to set down in writing and circulate their prophecies and interpretations of the law. But this work by word and writing was founded on the existing written law, the Torah of Moses; just as the true prophets sought to influence the people chiefly by preaching the law to them, by examining their deeds and habits by the rule of the divine will as revealed in the Torah, and by applying to their times the law’s promises and threatenings. For this work with the law, and application of it to life, Jer. uses the expression "style of the Shoferim," because the interpretation of the law, if it was to have valid authority as the rule of life, must be fixed by writing. Yet he did not in this speak only of authors, composers, but meant such as busied themselves about the book of the law, made it the object of their study. But inasmuch as such persons, by false interpretation and application, perverted the truth of the law into a lie, he calls their work the work of the lying style (pen). (Keil, C. F., & Delitzsch, F. (2002). Commentary on the Old Testament. (Vol. 7, Page 645). Peabody, MA: Hendrickson; bold and capital emphasis ours)

A similar situation exists with Muslims such as Zawadi, who have been deceived by the Quran and Islamic traditions in distorting the true meaning of the Holy Bible in order to make it agree with the teachings of Islam. And when Muslims can’t successfully distort the meaning they then resort to simply attacking the purity of the biblical text! Moreover, Islamic tradition has also distorted many passages of the Quran by interpreting them in a way that is contrary to the contextual and exegetical meaning of the texts in question.

Hence, just because persons may have access to the Law or any other religious text doesn’t necessarily guarantee that they will have a correct understanding since there will always be individuals masquerading as pious scholars in order to deceive them. After all, if access to the texts automatically resulted in doctrinal purity then we wouldn’t find so many divisions in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Zawadi’s rebuttal is rather naïve to say the least.

Finally, as we had said in our initial paper, even if we concede that Jeremiah 8:8 referred to a corruption of the text of the Law this would only be in reference to those copies in the possession of the scribes. This would not necessarily apply to all the other copies which were circulating among God’s righteous kings and prophets such as Daniel. Hence, the most this text would prove is that certain copies were corrupted without this implying that there weren’t other copies which had not been tampered with. As we will see shortly, plenty of uncorrupt texts existed, and continue to exist, thereby assuring that the people of God have access to the Divinely inspired Law.

Zawadi now tries to tackle my specific examples which conclusively prove that Jeremiah 8:8 doesn’t mean that the text of the Law was corrupted.

Jeremiah 26:4 says that God still commanded them to follow the Law. How could this be if the Law has been corrupted?

This does not necessarily have to be referring to the Law of Moses. It's possible it could be referring to the revelations that God had sent down to Jeremiah. e.g.. Jeremiah Chapter 7 and 36

Which is the oldest bible in existence? Is that the version you follow, or do you prefer a more recently doctored version?

ANSWER:

Hi, Definetly NOT. May be some sort of CORRUPT translation in the form of different language. This is due to the handy work of Satan/Jinn/Devil and also human nature to follow their own desires rather than following the simple message of all the prophets that is to believe in ONLY ONE GOD in order to achieve the PURPOSE OF LIFE.
Man or science and technology in their own limitations can’t answer this things/believes/struggle. Only thing left for the mankind is to find out from the ONLY ONE CREATOR that created everything that exists.
The thing is people don’t know what to follow. They follow something that haven’t said by prophets including Jesus (peace be upon him PBUH) himself. The solution to this is to do a research and find out the AUTHENCITY of the source or the books. It is not at all difficult in today’s world.

In Short: The ONLY PURE ORIGINAL WORD OF GOD is left on the phase of the planet is the HOLY QURAN that came with the prophet 1400 years ago without any SINGLE LETTER corrupted, that Guides, Faith with Proof, shows way of life, tells in details the mission of prophets including Jesus (peace be upon him PBUH), gives answers to all questions, solutions and tells much in details of what will be going to happen (past, present and future) and the purpose of existence, etc. The WORD OF GOD came with the SAME MESSAGE through prophets (from first prophet Adam to last prophet Mohammad (PBU them all) including Jesus (PBUH) and only person to interpret is the prophet of GOD at that time. Unlike HOLY QURAN all the other Books are corrupted and are not in the PURE ORIGINAL WORD OF GOD that’s is due to the handy work of Satan/Jinn/Devil and also human nature to follow their own desires rather than following the simple message of all the prophets that is to believe in ONLY ONE GOD in order to achieve the PURPOSE OF LIFE. In Muslim world there are many books available today in different languages of the ORIGINAL INTERPRETATION of the HOLY QURAN by the prophet of GOD about 1400 years ago that is the only interpretation that has to be follow to be the true follower of the prophet as commanded by GOD and the ONLY WAY to SUCCESS that is both in this WORLD and ETERNAL PARADISE. Actually the lying pen of the scribes has handled it falsely in writing the NIV. Read the King James Version of the Holy Bible. All others are man's interpretations.

Jeremiah 8

1 At that time, saith the LORD, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves: 2 And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth. 3 And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places whither I have driven them, saith the LORD of hosts. 4 Moreover thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD; Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return? 5 Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return. 6 I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle. 7 Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD. 8 How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain. 9 The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them? 10 Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely. 11 For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace. 12 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, saith the LORD. 13 I will surely consume them, saith the LORD: there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them. 14 Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defenced cities, and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD. 15 We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble! 16 The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan: the whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have devoured the land, and all that is in it; the city, and those that dwell therein. 17 For, behold, I will send serpents, cockatrices, among you, which will not be charmed, and they shall bite you, saith the LORD. 18 When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me. 19 Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country: Is not the LORD in Zion? is not her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, and with strange vanities? 20 The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved. 21 For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me. 22 Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

What brought this ruin? 1. The people would not attend to reason; they would not act in the affairs of their souls with common prudence. Sin is backsliding; it is going back from the way that leads to life, to that which leads to destruction. 2. They would not attend to the warning of conscience. They did not take the first step towards repentance: true repentance begins in serious inquiry as to what we have done, from conviction that we have done amiss. 3. They would not attend to the ways of providence, nor understand the voice of God in them, ver. ( 7 ) . They know not how to improve the seasons of grace, which God affords. Many boast of their religious knowledge, yet, unless taught by the Spirit of God, the instinct of brutes is a more sure guide than their supposed wisdom. 4. They would not attend to the written word. Many enjoy abundance of the means of grace, have Bibles and ministers, but they have them in vain. They will soon be ashamed of their devices. The pretenders to wisdom were the priests and the false prophets. They flattered people in sin, and so flattered them into destruction, silencing their fears and complaints with, All is well. Selfish teachers may promise peace when there is no peace; and thus men encourage each other in committing evil; but in the day of visitation they will have no refuge to flee unto.
