Both positive and negative charges flow.Alternating current means exactly that.It means the electromotive force (EMF)goes back and forth.The frequency(measured in hertz) is the rate in which it cycles.
One example is lightening.Studies have shown that a trailer first comes from Earth,this attracts the charge that has built up in the cloud formation(speculation is this happens from frozen water particles circulating around creating the charge).
DC or direct current flows in only one direction.Sometimes AC is converted to DC by the use of diodes which only allow electricity to flow in one direction through them.
