Start with the web.
A lot of small companies (local to you would be good) have no or very badly produced web presences.
A local trade directory (web based) will identify companies local to you and will tell you if they have a web site. You can judge for yourself if it is professional or not.
Start by offering a fairly cheap service to build up a portfolio. Do some for free if you have to. Then you can present your professional work to new customers. A lot of companies think a dedicated website will cost them a fortune but when a two year hosted URL costs about £40 you could do the whole thing for £200, which as advertising goes is petty cash. Don't forget to find their competitors websites before you give your sales pitch. To see that the other garage in town has a professional website may just tip the balance in your favour.
Good luck.

You need to work with a marketing company.

Web design is a simple commodity product these days and needs to be packaged with an overall marketing campaign.

There are not many, and a declining number, of customer who just want "web design"

If thats what you do, now is the time to change.

I just checked your website, http://www.platinumdesign.co.uk/

guess what i got......

The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties....

Perhaps you should sort that out before looking for more customers !

What is your skill level in designing websites? If it is good, I would start with local ad agencies and have them sell your services and give them a cut.

Another way is to go to your local printer. Talk to them about their customers who come in and ask about web design services. Have the deals go through them and give them a cut. You could be working with multiple printers in your area to keep you busy.

Advertise! People won't know about you unless you let them know.

BTW - do you have a web site of your own? How much credibility will you have if you don't?

The business isn't hard to get if you start small and grow from there.

You could join a web ring - and get on to the search engines. I'm an amateur and still learning but if you have a site - I'll consider giving you a link that the Yahoo bot and others will follow.

Join a local small business forum... A friend of mine did this and has had at least 2 years of work out of them and got a few lunches in with other people trying to start businesses up.
