Do you really want to do this? Is there a neighbor kid (or adult) you can trust to come over and walk him daily?

Some dogs can handle being left alone, but it's fair to say that others don't cope quite so well.
Is there nobody that could come in and walk him during the day? If you don't know anybody personally, maybe see if there's a dog-walking service. Your vet might know of some.
If after that you still feel you really can't keep him - phone local rescues to see if any have spaces. Try all-breed rescues (such as Dogs Trust), and also Breed Specific ones if he's a pure-bred. Look on www.dogpages.org.uk for details of rescues.
If you're going to re-home him it would ideally be sooner, rather than later - but if the rescues are full, ask if your dog could be put on a waiting list. Better to keep him in your home for the time being, than trying to do the whole re-homing procedure yourself.
Whatever you do - DON'T just advertise him as "FREE TO A GOOD HOME". Unless you are experienced in re-homing dogs and have the time to do thorough checks, he could very easily end up in a home far less suitable than your own.
A final note - well done for considering the dog's welfare. It can't be easy for you right now.
Good luck.

Go to a reputable animal shelter - DO NOT ADVERTISE IN THE LOCAL PAPERS OR OFFER FREE TO GOOD HOME. Lots of dogs end up in the wrong hands this way, you are far safer going to an animal shelter or rescue centre. Try www.dogpages.org.uk if you are in the uk - A rescue centre will do homechecks and spay/neuter if not already done and offer back up to the new owners so that your dog hopefully will not end up being used for breeding or be passed from home to home.
Have you considered employing a dog walker or asking a neighbour to sit in with him at lunchtimes? Often an elderly neighbour would love to help out and enjoy the company.

bring him to a shelter it is so much easier to place a dog we have a history on then one we do not... depending on the age of him he would go rather quickly due to the staff being to answer all questions ...how old is your dog?.. have you tried putting him in the paper? if he is a small doing an elderly person just may be interested you could put an add on a bulletin board at a senior housing complex.... where do you live ....maybe I could help.... by the way my dog stays home alone all day too I work and my children go to school it really is not an uncommon thing is he having problems with it sometimes leaving a tv on during the day helps

That's very sad. Advertise for a new owner in the local paper. Try to make sure the poor dog will be left home alone with his new owners if you can.

Call some vets in the area. They should know someone who wants a dog. My daughter has a dog and like you , the dog is left all alone all day long. It ate 3 living room sets, ruined 2 wall to wall carpeting, broke through 2 metal cages ate through 5 interior doors and has demolished countless items. They refuse to get rid of the dog. I congratulate you on your decision for thinking of the dogs well being to put him in a better environment.

Ummmmmmm....... maybe you got your dog to save him from being mistreated in others ways and you didn t think about that it also isn t humane to take it i you couldn t do what is best for such an pet.
Or
Didn t check in to what is actually required beore you got it. You must know from this site alone how often that happens. And how that all these extra animals end up in shelters who don t always make it into anothers proper care or no one ends up taking it and they have to take them out. People should have to watch some clips of what happens to all the uncared for before they are allowed to take one home.
Athough it is good that you are at least thinking of its welfare now but You made a decision that required responsibility and now instead of fulfilling your commitment instead of thinking of other ways to take care of this your looking to get rid of it.
I do know people who really love their pets and they pursue someone to take care of them when they are gone - just as Adults who work do with their kids when they can t always provide the care themselves because of work hours. They find another loving person to do this. So what about kids or other animal lovers to walk and play with you pet. They even have dog sitters. You must have liked dogs to get one - so you could still enjoy it and provide assistance. It would be tons happie to get to know others including to be able to - thru walking during the day - with its friends in the neighborhood or if a pet sitte meet othe pets to add to its life. It will hurt it pshycologically after it is gotten attached to you. Unless of course you have mistreated it in other ways and it already has been damaged by this.

Where ever he goes you must make sure he will be looked after, you want to see the home he is going to to make sure it is adequate for him, The last thing you want is to see the dog on animal rescue. How bad will you feel then. Think about the dog, Good Luck

You should put an add in your local newspaper and see if anybody wants him. But before you do that see if your friends or relatives want the dog. I hope somebody gets him before you have to take him to a shelter. I'm sure someone will want the dog though.

Depends on what dog he is. Could always contact the breed club if it is a pedigree as they provide rescue services.
If not then you will need to speak to the local animal shelter or advertise locally.

i relay don't mean to be nasty but didn't you think about that before you got that dog this is why when breeders sell pups they should check this out i do i even go to the new home before my pups leave me i don't care i don't breed for money i care very much about the well fare of my pups why don't you pay a dog walker to come in and take your dog out for a walk what ever you do make sure he goes to a good home and not to someone that is going to be cruel to him good luck hope you find a good home for your dog
