Depends on how long you intend to stay. For china, you can get a visa free entry for up to 7 days and for taiwan,14 days. However, bear in mind that for these visa free entries, you CANNOT extend your stay at the local embassy by appplying for a visa after the visa free period ends. You will have to leave the country when the date is due.

If you enter the countries with a visa, you will be able to extend your stay by reapplying for a visa at the local embassy should the need arise.

It is best the check with your travel agent regarding this. They will be able to give you more detailed advice depending on your travel plans

To China, regardless of where you are from, you do need a visa. You can apply for one at the chinese emabassy or consulate nearest to you.
To taiwan, it depends on how long you are planing to be there. The average person can spend up to 14 days in Taiwan with out having any special visa, but best to check with a travel agent (who can usally help with visa things)

I have been to china quite a few times you always need a visa , the place is fab , the people are really nice and always willing to help you , of course the big cities such as Shanghai , Shenzen and Xiamen are great and lots to do , but try and get in a see the smaller towns see how the real people live . normal saftey rules appy i.e dont wave your money about and dont walk down dark alleys . if i had to say which one is better stick with china , of another thing you need a separte visa for Tawain

For China you definitely do, but I believe there is a visa on arrival in Taiwan.

You need two different visas for China and Taiwan.

For China, consult the following site:

For Taiwan:

If you have an Irish passport then you have full rights to travel, live, and work in all 27 EU countries - in fact EU laws forbid other countries from requiring any further documentation of EU citizens than a passport or national ID card (which Ireland doesn't have anyway), so you definitely do not need a visa. Other non-EU countries like Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland also don't require visas. If you're travelling to some European countries outside the EU, Belarus or Russia for instance, then you would need a visa.
