Take a look at the following page. If you scroll down a little there are links for you to read information for the consumer and for the professional ... both of which give quite a detailed explanation of how and why it's used, side-effects, etc.
From briefly reading, it's a diuretic (water tablet), often given because you have a fluid retention (build up due to congestive heart failure), your body absorbs too much salt (which makes fluid retention more likely), or high blood pressure.
You really should be asking your doctor why this treatment is being offered, if you're not already aware.
