I am the same way, and would like to see the answers in this question. I can't sleep because of it sometimes. I've found that when I push a pillow or the covers into my belly, while laying on my side, it helps a little. But it feels like my breath is so shallow! Very annoying, and disturbing at the same time. I too, am a smoker. Could this be it? I know there are going to be some smart-aleck answers to this...

You fail to mention your size.
Often times when someone lays down the weight of their chest can compromise the chest's ability to rise and fall when breathing.
I betcha that you like to hold your hands ontop of your head when you sleep too.
This allows more freedom in breathing by allowing your chest to expand "sideways".
You will probably notice some difference in sleeping when you fall asleep in a recliner. . . the weight of your chest is not so much falling against your lungs.
A large abdomen can compromise the diaphram and lungs as well esp. when you lay on your back.
I am not going to tell you to quit smoking as you already know this and so do I and am starting my 3rd most recent attempt to do so as I notice that when laying I tend to feel short of breath.
You probably should have your lungs checked.

More than likely your smoking, weight, or sleep apnea, asthma, or too much mucous in your sinuses. Take salt water and boil it in your house to see if it does not open up the air ways to your lungs more. That or you can have fluid build up from an infection and/or cancer/emphsema too. Might need to get some help from a doctor fast. I almost died literally due to this problem.

I wouldn't mess around with getting second rate medical care on this site. I'd go get it checked out at the doctor's office. Only he can run the proper tests that will tell him what the real problem is. It could be something as simple as the fact that you need to quit smoking (and you know you need to, for your sake), or it could be a multiple of other things, including bronchitis, pneumonia, emphysema or asthma. So, get it checked out, for your sake, and the sake of your loved ones. <*)))><

Sounds a little like congestive heart failure.....also you most likely have COPD as well if you have been a smoker for any length of time. Sounds most like CHF though. Go see a physician and find out. Good luck.

Even if I'm a doctor, I won't give any advice or diagnosis - unless I personally see you. Bottom line, if you seek peace of mind - better see a doctor.

For the meantime, stop smoking and don't listen to hearsays or rely to any other suggestions - ASIDE FROM REALLY SEEING A DOCTOR!.

And in anything that concerns your health, don't take any risk and don't waste time.

Could be biliary Cholic...
When the bile ducts get clogged with gall stones.

Since the gall bladder has no pain sensors it uses the center of your chest and your right shoulder to altert you of pain.

It is commonly mis-diagnosed as acid reflux, and can only be seen with ultrasound.

If gallstones are not removed they will lead to eventual death.

I know there is a sickness that does that to you, get a few more pillows and sleep on your back. Keep proped up, and see a doctore becuase it might be serious. But it might very well just be an alergy in your room.
