Rattler, I know it was a combined effort, but I mean, which country of all the Allied countries was MOST important when it came to winning the war.

The US was instrumental, but also came in late. I hate to use a wrestling metaphore, of all things, but it's like being the last one in the ring in a Battle Royale. You're fresh, everyone else is already getting worn out. But since the US would have gotten it handed to them without the help of the Allies, you certainly can't say the US won single handed.

The key is we were ALLIES !! The USA provided the material, Russia provided the stamina, France provided the pity-factor, and the United Kingdom provided is the BEST quotable lines (Thank you Winston!). China was a mess in it's own civil war, but the ALLIES won.

Germany's allies were Italy and Japan in WWII. They were called the Axis powers. They were quite fascist. WWII began because Germany invaded Poland who had England and France as allies. These alliances can cause widespread wars when one side comes to the aid of others due to treaties, etc. Italy really wasn't a very effective ally for Germany in WWII. After WWII, nuclear warfare changed everything and the stakes in getting into a massive world war like we had in the 1940s. Can you imagine a despot like Hitler with a nuclear bomb? The Nazi Germans were working on such a bomb, but fortunately did not succeed. You should read a book called, Is Paris Burning Yet?, about one German general who defied Hitler's orders to blow up Paris and kept Paris' cultural treasures intact. Individuals' acts of courage do make a big difference.

Without question USA played a major role in ending the War, however the development of the Atomic Bomb was a joint effort, and only served to shorten the war. Britain could be said to have played the role in stopping Hitlers march, and USA held back the Japanese in the Pacific. All of the Allied Nations played important roles, particularly Australia who were examples as fierce fighters to all the others. Australia held back the Japanese in New Guinea with hand to hand combat on the Kokoda Trail, delaying the advance that could have made Japan more powerful. Christians prefer to believe that God gave the victory over evil.

To many books have answered this as america. World war II was already won before the A bomb was dropped. The Japanese were already in full retreat. The bomb only speeded the end and reduced the number of soldiers lives that were lost. The Pacific theatre of the war was only won because of the ending of the European conflict. America in western books looks like winner, but It was in Russia that the Axis fighting machine was decimated, with out Russia all our Text books would be in German now.

i believe you could make an argument for any of the first three. britain survived after france fell, giving the allies a launching point for attacking western europe (without which dday would not have happened) and occupying germany's attention in africa as well. america provided much of the material and men that ended up winning the war, but we didn't have any real effect until the middle of 1944, almost 5 years into the war. america actually was a major world power, despite what the person above said. and the ussr held up the majority of germany's troops and equipment from 1941 to the end. they sustained huge casualties and still managed to take berlin

It was a combined effort. Even with the support of the USA, there is no way that the allies would have won without the heroic efforts of the Soviet Union.

Without the unbelievable ingenuity of the British the Nazis would have won the war in Europe by 1941 and then they would have been able to concentrate on the Soviet Union.

The tide had turned by 1941 and Nazis were losing before the Americans joined in. The Eastern Front was collapsing and the Soviets were just beginning to drive the Nazis back. The British had seriously organised their war effort, there was no chance that an invasion of Britain was going to succeed, and they were making gains in North Africa.

With an amazing effort of resistance, the Chinese held back the Japanese against all the odds, long enough for the Americans to defeat the Japanese Navy and start to position themselves for the invasion of Japan.

The Soviet Red Army crushed the Japanese army in Manchuria and Korea by 1945. The Japanese war effort was spent before the USA dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

No one denies that the USA was a major factor in considerably shortening the war by years. But why do some Americans insist on trying to take the credit for it? It is very disrespectful of many brave men and women from many different countries who gave their lives fighting the Nazis, the Fascists, and the Bushido.

Have some respect!

Let me clear somthing up here, the US only joined in because of japan, i wouldnt even say it was the same war, yes it was a war it just happened to be at the same time as second world war, and they did not help us win, if hitler didnt send his troops to russia and had a little paiteince we would all be talking german, so any american thank you for trying but unfortunatly your glory stands only with yourself, you didnt impress anybody, you did your job now get over it.

Now russia, yes russia was our best allie, these people faught with only a magazing clip and picked up any gun they came across, they never retreated once and constantly moved forward.

and the UK, now the uk did everything, we initially started the allie forces against hitlers reign, but remeber we never would have helped but hitler invaded poland. At the end of the day, alot of people died and alot of people faught for there country, what does it matter who was allies who was the enemy, the fact that one of the most motivational speakers in the history of earth and his forces were taken down by the people who actually care about there families and not polotics!

Yeah read a history book, see how the US hung back until the rest of the world was on it's knees. Profit hungry bas tards. As always looking to gain an edge by destabilising the rest of the world
It was in the end a joint effort, but I refuse to give credit to the US, they could have avoided so much pain and suffering if they'd given a crap and joined in earlier

The UK and her commonwealth countries was instrumental from the start of the war and tried to stay off an all out domination of Europe. The USA came in years later and only after they were directly attacked.
