You will have the herpes virus for the rest of your life. You may never have another "out break"/ sores or you may get outbreaks/sores frequently or infrequently. Everyone is different. Different triggers such as stress, caffeine and a cold or flu can bring about an outbreak. If you find that you have frequent outbreaks you can take medication such as Valtrex, an anti-viral medication, to make the outbreaks heal faster when you have them or to take the medication every day to stop you from having outbreaks all together.
You can spread herpes to your partner when you have sores, it is highly contagious when you have sores--you should abstain from sex during an outbreak. When you do not have sores there is a very, very low risk of being able to spread the virus to your partner. So, you should always, always wear condoms to lower your partner's risk of acquiring to virus from you.

It can be months and sometimes years before a person gets their first outbreak of genital herpes.

I've read during the first year a person usually has 4-5 outbreaks, give or take a few. Every person is different.

Also, the longer you have had the virus typically the less outbreaks you will get and the less severe they will be. I have had genital herpes for almost 6 years now and I haven't an outbreak in over 2 years (and that's without taking the medication every day)!

I've had herpes for over 12 years. Only 4 or 5 outbreaks mostly in the beginning. The last one was in 1997. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

Herpes is really no big deal. LOTS of people have it. I was devastated at first and really angry at my partner even though she told me she had it before we ever had sex. I felt unclean and worthless. I was the most critical person in the world about it. Now I'm open about it. No big deal. It hasn't affected my life at all really.

My wife has never contracted the virus after 5 years of marriage and 2 kids. There is always a possibility to pass it when you don't have an outbreak, but the odds are much, much slimmer. Be up front and honest with your partner(s) about it is the only advice I can give.

Good luck!

Everyone is different. Some people never have outbreaks, others get them all the time. Stress seems to be the main culprit in breakouts. Stay healthy, ask your Dr. for Valtrex (sp?) so you can nip those outbreaks in the bud and ALWAYS insist that your partner wears a condom. Even when your herpes is dormant (no outbreak) you can pass on the virus to him. It's not as bad as you think. It just takes some getting used to and some preventative measures. Good Luck to you!

No, it can't be spread through toilet seats or anything like that. It can only be spread sexually. I use acyclovir whenever I get an outbreak and it's very effective and much cheaper than Valtrex. I've never used any over the counter ointments or anything, you might want to ask your doctor about that.

I think people with herpes simplex sometimes don't transfer it to someone. I really don't know how that works, but it's like that. And if I were you? I would go to my doctor and get vaccinated. It is much easier that way because that can be treated. I don't know how long the virus can stay with your body, but it can still be transfered. Intercourse, outercourse. And if your under age... tell your doctor or your mom so that she can help you. If your embarass tell a school nurse or a scholl doctor.
