That sounds like my apartment when I had my first job! The previous idea was a good one and the other ones were just .......never mind. If you can put some light color paint on the paneling it will help. You can purchase a product from the closest paint store when applied to paneling will hold the paint OK. Normally paneling isn't always real good about that in a bathroom. Sorry I've forgotten the name of the product. The size of it, a gallon of paint will be more then enough.

If you have any questions on some of this you can send a message. I'm more then happy to help. It's good to see someone wanting to make a place they don't own look better.

friggin cheapo??? Well maybe the landlord don't let you do anything because you are in a some type of rent control? and you paid very little rent.... Maybe he is not the cheap one....But that is another history! What you can do is allow the landlord increase the rent with the condition of a fair price and if you have rent control!!! make sure you get a new contract, where have your new conditions and his. Most cases the law only allow to increase up to 50% but you will be getting a new bathroom, Maybe I am wrong but that happen a lot in the area, you will be ending with a great deal and just a few hundreds dollars increase of your rent. Believe or not there still a lot of people that only paid a few hundreds of dollar for rent in NYC and they still complaining. You can also get a new apartment more modern... Hey are you my tenant !@$#!$^!#%* ?... Joking :)

You could put up some mirrors and paint the bathroom white. There is not much other than that to do except have your landlord to make it a touch bigger if you are going to stay there for a while

its like my daughter bathroom, shes perspiring inside lol., first i measured the lenght from the top flashing bowl upto the ceiling (from the ceiling, i leave 15 inches) and measured the width, then i bought a mirror (i give the size and they cut the desired size) i put it in the bathroom (top of the flashing bowl) screwd it properly.(be sure the mirror has four holes in every corner for the screw) you can ask from the mirror store or glass factory to put a hole in the mirror. about cheap panelling, "is it made of tiles? or made of decorated plywood or paper wall? if its made of tiles, no need to change, just scrub with detergent, or stain remover (if there is), wipe it dry, then spray some polishing chemical, like pledge, then wipe it to desired shine. if it is made of plywood/wood, be creative enough, buy a paint or varnish for the new look. paint, pick/choose your favorite color and combine it with desired another color, let it dry, finishing touches is the varnish, apply it evenly. its not expensive, tips of buying paint, choose the cheaper one, it will look expensive if you already apply the varnish on it. it is made of paper wall, absolutely you have to change the paper walling, but theres an alternative, if the paper wall is rubberize, just wash it with plain soap and water and rinse it. you didnt specify the panelling. hope this may help you.
