Pizza, like so many other foods, did not originate in the country for which it is now famous. Unless you have researched the subject, you, like so many people, probably always thought Pizza was strictly an Italian creation.

The foundations for Pizza were originally laid by the early Greeks who first baked large, round and flat breads which they topped with various items such as olive oils, spices, potatoes and other things. Tomatoes were not discovered at that time or, very likely, they would have used them as we do today.

Eventually the idea of flat bread found its way to Italy where, in the 18th century, the flat breads called "Pizzas", were sold on the streets and in the markets. They were not topped with anything but were enjoyed au naturel. Since they were relatively cheap to make, were tasty and filling, they were sold to the poor all over Naples by street vendors.
So the answer is no.

There are actually very many ways to prepare pizza that go beyond being a disk of cooked dough with tomato sauce and cheese on it. Savory cakes (tall, round cakes filled with meats, cheese, eggs, and other things according to region in Italy) are called pizzas (pizza pieni: stuffed pizzas-- pizzachino: meat stuffed pizza cakes) as are certain savory pies. "Stromboli" (stuffed bread) is also a kind of pizza. So, if you were imaginative and went through the trouble of preparing pizzas rather than buying them from the corner pizza shop, you might be able to live on pizza and like it. Indeed, this evening I plan to make a stromboli stuffed with oven-fried eggplant and yellow squash and sauteed mushrooms and asparagus with gorganzola. For Christmas (even though this is traditionally made for Easter) I am going to prepare a pizzachino made of Italian cold cuts, ricotta and eggs.

I'm Italian and I will eat pizza at any time of day or night. The best pizza is right out of the fridge the morning after. MMMMM!

It has to be real pizza though. None of that Pizza Hut crap.

Actually, Italians rarely eat pizza. It's just not of those things they have on a regular basis. Just like mexicans don't sit around eating tacos all the time.

Most families I know here (in Italy) with children, and young adults think it is a treat to have pizza at least, but not always once a week. Older people like me enjoy it once in a while. There are a lot of different pizza's here though, spiedini, calazoni, and most regular pizzas are thin crisp. My favorite is, (yeah your gonna laugh) ricotta and spinach with black olives. You'd be amazed at all the different types that are here.
