If you cut an apple into 2 pieces you will end up with 2 pieces. However, over time, the openfaced apple will oxidize and begin to turn brown on the exposed side.

Well very very interesting question, i must say...
What happens when u cut an apple into two halves is best explained by the "ApPle cut in two halves theory"
It says..." Everytime a apple is bisected diametrically at an line equidistant from both the ends, and at angle ok 76 degrees...with an isolated knife with a .01mm sharpness, u get two pieces"

well when an apple is cut in 2 the core is revealed and then if too much air gets to the apple it turns brown and goes bad. now that we are over that plz vote me best answer and also so far im the only answer! Adios'

when an apple is cut into two the iron in it combines with oxygen (oxidizing) and the red colour which we see inside if open for a long time is formed by this reaction

It lost it beauty as a whole and after some time starts to overripe, rot and changes it's colour. So, let it be natural n enjoy it as a whole.
