I ate soy for years, I loved tofu scrambles, ate tons of veggie burgers, soy lattes, soy milk, fried or steamed tofu, stir fry tofu with soy or teriyaki sauce, tofu/veggies with hummus. I actually miss it b/c I thought it was good, and low fat.

What do you know I gained 80 lbs from it turns out that it shut my metabolism down by blocking my thyroid hormone and screwed up my thyroid (if it wasn't already screwed up to begin with). So I thought I was eating healthy, I wasn't I was making my body shut down. So basically it's like kryptonite to me or a major food allergen or worse.

My advice is to watch out for soy. The isoflavens in it have the equivalant of 5 birth controls pills (the hormones) in a glass of soy milk. Also it is the MOST processed food in the u.s. and hey, PROCESSED food is bad for you!

Is it your kryptonite or will you at least consider my precautions when eating it?

I eventually found a website/book that is good called. www.thewholesoystory.com

Basically soy is supposed to be good for you but the u.s. overprocesses it and takes out all the healthy benefits nowadays.

Hiya. I am so glad you said that!!!!!! Soy milk was my kryptonite too!!! It caused me to gain weight in my pectorals. I went up to a 36 DD which I hate and changed from a pear to an apple shape!!!! People had never heard of soy doing this (if you looked at my questions you will see I asked a question about a soy milk machine but not to make soy milk , you can use them to make oat or rice milk!!!)

How did you fix it in the end honey? Did you loose the 80lbs? If so how did you do it sweetie? (please E-mail me and let me know, I am so relieved that I wasn't the only one that soy rebuilt!!!!)

I have been knocking myself OUT to loose weight ('Cos I hate my chest and don't have a waist as such, my legs are skinnier but strangely I am still a UK 12)

Dear, I hear what you are saying. I would say that if you would ever wish to try soy again, to first talk to your doctor and see if the unprocessed tofu would be an option. The unprocessed tofu that is manufactured by the mom and pop outfits...many of them are Asian food places have less isoflavens than the mega-million dollar industry tofu brands. I get my tofu from the local market that buys from the Korean mom and pops just down the street.

I am 49 and will be 50 on Christmas Eve. Tofu and soy milk have been very kind to me. My body is my temple. I would say that if you wish to again eat soy to eat more unprocessed brands with the blessing of your doctor. Also, include all the wonderful beans and grains available now, too. We eat 10 different varieties of beans also here during the week. We have 5 different unprocessed rices and 5 other various grains, too. All in all, make sure you are getting all of your important nutrients in your healthful diet.

Too bad the industry tofu is the one that many people are eating. Tofu has gotten a bad rap because of it. Hopefully when 2008 rolls around many fat cats in industries will have to pay the piper...when the biggest fat Dubya slinks to his ranch in Crawford!

Amen! I did the same thing; plus my hair fell out by the hands full and I gained 120 pounds. People do not know that soy contains some dangerous natural hormones and it blocks certain types of medication also the body's natural hormones. During menopause soy will really wreck your body. More people should be educated about the harmful side effects of soy products and manufacturers are putting soy products into everything.

I agree with auntie Barbra on this one. I live in Korea and I see people here who only weigh twenty pounds more than you gained ie.100 pounds. I see 100 pound elderly and young people and they all consume a lot of soy mostly as tofu although more recently also as soy milk.

Try a book...Eat Right For Your Blood Type by Peter D'Adamo.
You may be eating the wrong foods entirely.

I think Americans eat alot of over processed foods. If we stuck to the basics we'd be fine. Too much artificial color and flavorings out there. And too much prepackaged foods.
We live in a fast paced, everything has to be convenient society and it affects our health.

i don't think it affects everyone like that; I've been vegan for a couple years and on birth control for five years. Had my thyroid tested recently and it's perfectly healthy.

My kryptonite is lentils. They make me soooo gassy....

Everything in moderation, right? I love vanilla soymilk in my smoothies. I use plain in my cereal and sometimes my lattes, that's about it.
