I am on a vegetarian diet right now and the kids always want to taste my food.I know vegetables are the healthiest thing for them, but these aren't pure vegetables, and I am not sure how they are made. These are boca products and morningstar, and I know low fat or fat free are not healthy options for kids because they need the fat (especially my kids).I always cook them seperate real meals but they always want to try what I am having.I know these products are called veggie burgers and veggie bacon, but are they safe for kids?and what's really in them (obviously other than veggies)?

My kids were raised as vegetarians. There were 3. 2 are now vegans. I would tell you to go ahead and serve your children the meat substitute products sparingly. Many of them have a lot of sodium and corn syrup solids. These are not healthy products for ANYONE. I am still writing letters to the manufacturers and begging them not to include these products. So far Gardenburger has done a pretty good job of not including filler products and extra flavor enhancers.
The bottom line for feeding kids a good veggie or vegan diet...include LOTS of vegetables, fruits, whole, unprocessed grains and legumes. The less processing goes on with your kids' food, the more nutrients your little ones will be getting. And make sure, if you include foods without vitamin B-12 added to add a supplemental childrens' vitamin to their diet. My kids ate a lot of soy products and lots of plain beans. This was in the 1980's and a lot has changed for the better in vegan/veggie food selections for kids.
Good luck! Your kids will thank you when they are in their early 20's and their bodies are thin and strong...all their friends' bodies will be obese and unhealthy!

i can tell you this........it's not safe for your kids or anyone for that matter to eat any animal products. kids don't need diets high in fat, and i'm sure they get too much anyway with potato chips, sliced cheese, candy and so on. boca and morningstar products are sometimes high in sodium but no more than eating a small bag of potato chips or a can of soda. i recomend that your kids only eat vegetarian friendly foods. and to answer your question more directly, bacon is one of the worst things that you can eat. veggie bacon is merely shaped soy protien.

Yep, I eat these sort of products all the time! It's not the taste of meat that I oppose to or find offensive, it's the animal cruelty that is behind it. It's just an added bonus that these products are much better for my health as well :)

alot of that pre-made vegetarian food is high in sodium. Let them taste it but not live off of it. There are many families out there were all members are vegitarians...this is a good thing so long as it's done right. You should contact your doctor or nutritionist should you decide to take on this lifestyle.

Why wouldn't it be safe? What's wrong with eating vegetarian products? I don't like Boca products myself, I prefer Morningstar. I'm guessing you don't know how a 'real' hamburger is made either. Read the box for the ingredients on what is in vegetarian products. I think it's funny that you think vegetarian products are harmful for kids, when I would think it was the other way around. Meat products (who knows what's in that stuff) is probably worse.

Of course they are safe for children. They couldn't sell them if they were not edible. Many, MANY children are raised as vegetarians, and they do just fine. Look at the ingredients on the boxes to find out what's in them.

You, along with your children, should be following the food pyramid.
If you're looking to lose weight, a vegetarian diet isn't going to help you long term. You may lose some weight, initially, because your body is being depleted of significant nutrients. Therefore, you will gain it back. Don't go for a quick fix...think long term goals. Everything in moderation!
As for what's really in them? Look at the back of the package. It'll tell you...
