After Rita (my Boston Terrier) pees and/or dumps she kicks back on the ground in every direction (we're usually doing our walk together). She doesn't appear to be trying to cover up anything. My take is that she trying to spread her "markings" over a wider space of ground.

Do you think I'm correct about this? What's your take on this?

PS: I've already noted that I should stand back out of the way.

Oh! I'm not worried about this behavior. I'm simply trying to, let's say, "enter the mind of my dog."

This is part of the marking behavior. It is very common in dogs. Nothing to worry about, let her have some fun kicking dirt around.

We always called it "peeling out", lol.

From what I just found, it's for the same reason cats bury their business; to cover their scent. It doesn't cover it completely, but it does help. Supposedly, it's more common in females because they instinctually have the tendency to try and cover up the scent of their pups. But I've seen a lot of males who do it, as well....including my new lab/boxer mix.

So it's instinct.

You're probably right - one of my greyhounds is a very enthusiastic kicker and the other 2 have learned the hard way to stay well back or get kicked in the head!
