Chinese food. In most Chinese restaurants even the vegetable dishes are "finished" with chicken stock. Took me a while to figure out why I always felt sick after Chinese meals, even when they were labelled "no MSG." Now unless I can find a place with a waiter whose English is good enough for me to quiz him about the choices that do not involve chicken stock, I avoid Chinese.
Also lots of frozen diners like Lean Cuisine that sound vegetarian are not. There was one called "Santa Fe Rice and Beans" that sounded yummy, but it had meat fat listed in the ingredients. Yuck!

Some people put meat stock in vegetable soups or vegetable risottos, rendering them useless to a Vegetarian !!!!
I was once looking at packaged chocolate chip cookies in a local sandwich shop, just looking out for E numbers . I didn't find any but I came across fish oil as an ingredient?!?!? For shame, who on earth would want to RUIN a SACRED food like A CHOC. CHIP COOKIE with fish oil? There is absolutely no need for it to be in there, That company should be ashamed of themselves don't you think????

Look at the ingredients on the back.... All those numbers are not good...
Alot of the flavourings, preservatives, colourings and antioxidants are made from derivitives of animals.
Basically if you want to be a veggie or vegan then adopt the organic persona as well it works best and is extremely healthy.

Most yogurt contains gelatin (derived from animal bones). Many kinds of packaged food contain chicken or beef stock (or fat) for flavoring (like Stovetop cornbread stuffing and since rices).

Rice pilaf doesn't normally involve meat.
But -- fries/chips. McDonald's fries still have beef in them in Canada, and some of the better-regarded chip wagons here use lard.

Alot of packaged food does...especially the cheaper rice dishes. They often contain beef or chicken fat.

One that I know of is marshmellows, they have gelatin in them, beef bones. But I, as a chef, never put meat products in my rice pilaf, just veggies, rice, salt and water.

Frosted Pop-Tarts...
Gelatin in the frosting... sad I know... (Just like frosted shredded wheat cereal)
But, the plain ones are pretty tasty.... strawberry with some peanut butter smeared on top!
