'Tandoori' chicken is actually the style of cooking - 'tandoor' is an indian clay oven. All tandoori food is grilled on a charcoal at very high temperatures. Practically no fat is used in tandoori preparations.
You can cook chicken kabab style or whole, or in large pieces - chicken is marinated for some time in tomato sauce, yogurt, and spices such as saffron, tandoori masala and turmeric, before being cooked at high temperatures in a tandoor. The tandoori spice can be bought at Indian grocery stores

If you go to a Indian restaurant most places to save money will use only legs and thigh combination, a skewered tandoori dish is referef to as "Tikka", and is cooked ina yougart based sauce with assorted vegetables.
There is no right or wrong way to do it at home, your preferece is yours domain, the best marinate is homemade but now a days they are a variety of store bought product, just make sure to marinate in the frig, and if you use whole chicken parts, slit the flesh along the bones to aid in the cooking, it will goe fast as the ehat takes longer to reach the interior bone if opened it is 1/3 the time quicker.
