Please don't laugh, serious replies appreciated...

I have a sore on my mouth. I cleaned it out and took a shower. In the shower, while I was cleaning my genital area, I freaked thinking I could give myself HSV. I mean I freaked- I cleaned the area for a good half hour with soap, including using disinfecting wipes and dousing the area in 91% isopropyl alcohol (yea, it burned!).

Question- can you give yourself genital herpes (touching a cold sore on your mouth then touching your genitals), and for my particular case do you think I am ok?

It is not impossible, but it is EXTREMELY UNLIKELY. If you have any herpes sores on any area of your body you should wash your hands with soap and water after touching the sores. You really should just refrain from touching the sores. The virus doesn't really survive in the air/outside the body. The virus is passed from skin to skin contact only, and only via mucous membranes to other mucous membranes--mouth, genitals and eyes. And, most importantly you should never, ever have used the wipes and the alcohol on your genitals!!! Those products are very caustic and can highly irritate your skin, especially on your genitals.

I found this on webmd.com. I didn't actually realize that herpes simplex I could actually infect the genital area as well, but washing your hands thouroghly (no more than five minutes with scrubbing) should be good enough. By the way, viruses cannot be killed by alcohol, so save yourself the pain next time.

From webmd.com
"What causes cold sores?
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of herpes simplex virus (HSV). HSV-1 usually leads to lip and mouth sores (herpes labialis), while HSV-2 most often leads to genital herpes. However, both virus types can cause cold sores or genital herpes if skin comes into contact with either type."

Theoretically, yes you can. But, this is REALLY rare. You'd really have to be rubbing that sore good and then touch your genital area. It's always a good idea to wash your hands real good after you have touched herpes sores.

Usually genital herpes is contracted by having sex with someone who has the virus, or by receiving oral sex from someone who has cold sores on their mouth and lips. There are other ways, but they are so RARE.

If you are really concerned you can always get tested. I don't think it will do much good though, because it's going to be positive for HSV1 (herpes simplex virus one) which you already know you have (cold sores). See if you develop an outbreak. People usually get their first genital herpes outbreak anywhere from 2-20 days after being infected. Good luck to you!
