If he is a collector, get him "the Cream of Clapton" album. As for the Mark Knopfler album, get an original record of "dire Straits" or "Love Over Gold".
If he is not wild over collecting stuff, buy him their anthologies. Or tickets to a concert.
Caring surprises? Get him "All the Roadrunning" by Mark Knopfler. It just came out a month or two ago, and has love song type music, with the same classic composition of music Knopfler has to offer.
