I was looking in the obituaries and I noticed one of my friends from high school died. I later found out the cause of death was veganism. I had heard where a vegan diet could reduce your life expectancy, but I never really thought it was that severe until now. I used to ivite him over for bar-b-q, but he would also say he doesn't like meat. If he would have just eat a little bar-b-q, he would be alive today.

i've got not got self belief that vegan diets can decrease existence expectancy in a million/2, in actuality lots the different. I has been shown that vegans easily stay lots longer than people who've a meat dominant weight-reduction plan. it is via vegans getting lots greater mandatory supplementations and minerals from all of the vegetables extremely than from the beef which in basic terms provides a small element of mandatory supplementations. Vegans although must be careful to have the potential to have a sufficient quantity of protein, as vegetables are no longer protein heavy (like meats).

No, being a vegan is normally a way to extend your life expectancy (this study combined all types of vegetarians and vegans):
Diet and mortality
A comparison of the mortality (death rate) of meat eaters and non-meat eaters after 12 years of follow-up was published in the British Medical Journal on 25 June 1994. The results show that after adjusting for smoking habits, body mass index (a measure of obesity) and social class (three factors known to influence mortality), the non-meat eaters experienced lower death rates for all causes of death combined, ischaemic heart disease and all cancers combined, the differences being statistically significant (meaning that they were unlikely to have arisen by chance) for all causes and all cancers combined. Only time will tell whether these differences are real or a manifestation of the 'healthy volunteer effect' (the vegetarian volunteers may have been better motivated and therefore healthier than their non-vegetarian controls). If real, it will be interesting to see whether the lower mortality for all cancers combined applies 'across the board' or only to certain cancers which other studies have suggested vegetarians may be less likely to suffer from. Eventually, it may even be possible to determine which features of the vegetarian diet account for the lower mortality.

Risk of death from cancer and ischaemic heart disease in meat and non-meat eaters. Thorogood M, Mann J, Appleby P, McPherson K. British Medical Journal 1994;308:1667-1671.

That is complete misinformation. Neither a Vegan diet nor a Vegetarian diet will shorten your life. In fact, most of the time, both diets will help to not only extend your life, but also increase the overall health quality of your life.

However, that is only if it is TRULY a Vegan or Vegetarian diet. Simply cutting meat out of your diet does not make you a Vegan or a Vegetarian. You have to make sure that your diet has all the nutrients and vitamins that your body needs to function. That is truly whether you eat meat or not.

If your friend died of "veganism," that is because he obviously did not know what it meant to eat like a Vegan.

Either you are full of BS, or your sources were BSing you. No such thing as veganism as cause of death.

Lots of old vegans running around, writing books, running marathons and laughing their butts off at your quesion.

In half? That would mean that a vegan would have a life expectancy of only 35 to 40 years.

Your friend died of something else. The only way a carrot could kill someone is by choking, or if a frozen carrot was used to stab him in the heart.

Maybe you misread the obit. Perhaps your freind was killed by a rampaging vegan who was jonesing for a pork rib.

In general, no. Absolutely not. As long as vegans make efforts to get the proper nutrition, it has no bearing on life expectancy. That's a myth.

Unfortunately, a lot of people don't even know what proper nutrition is, and so they do NOT get it. That, of course, can adversely affect someone. Do you think your friend tried to get the proper balanced diet, or did he just want to eat a salad every day?

The famous 'thing' that people think vegans don't get enough of is protein. There are ways to get protein and other essential vitamins/minerals that do not require animal sources. Whether your friend knew of them or not, I don't know.

How neat! Where on earth did your buddy's family find a doctor who would list "Vegan" as cause of death? I bet the AMA report on that one is gonna be a real hoot to read.

Maybe when I croak, he'll do a nice death certificate for me, too. Assuming that his poor cholesterol-clogged heart hasn't ground to a halt years before, that is.

As long as the diet is sufficiently varied to include all minerals and protein, the vegan and vegetarian lifestyles are extremely healthy and if anything will add on years not take them away. I can't see how anyone could die of healthy eating.
