I know this is a really stupid question, but it's my daughter's birthday today and we bought a set of candles - each is a letter spelling out the words 'Happy Birthday'. So, imagine they are stood up on the cake. Should the word Happy be in front or behind the word Birthday. My partner put it in front, but I said he was wrong because you read top to bottom. (you have to visualise it). Anyway! he won't have it. so what do you think?

Happy would go behind. Or you could settle it like aduilts and do it around the perimiter of the cake so that no one loses the argument. *you're still right, though, sweety.*

Do you know - we had exactly the same argument ourselves a little while ago - not quite divorce proceedings thankfully and we got round it by putting the letters round the edge of the cake. It looked quite good.

Like your partner, I put the "Happy" in front of "Birthday". My logic is that, if you are reading something that goes from front to back like this, then the first word should be in front of the second word. Best analogy I can think of is a filing cabinet or a library index - you'd expect "A" to be at the front wouldn't you, because this is what comes first?

Just get rid of the happy birthday candles and buy some of those that re-light when you blow them out and really confuse the poor kid!
No-really compromise and do the semi-circle thing, or put happy behind of birthday, most people here read top to bottom!

It looks better on the cake, but you get the idea!! Happy Birthday to her!

Take the poor kid to Chuck E. Cheese, bring the cake and candles with you, and ask the staff to put them on the cake before they bring it out to her.

She has a good time, and no matter how they put the candles on, nobody's wrong because neither one of you made the final decision. Problem solved, everybody's happy!

Can I just say that I think this is the very best question I have ever seen on Yahoo answers!
I have NO IDEA, But I think I'm with you; If you can't get them in a line (possibly curving around the outside edge), then I'd put "happy" at the back.....

Arrange in a semi-circle if possible.
Otherwise Happy in front since the person is normally in front of the cake, reading toward the back.

ON the top, you are right. That's how they place them at cake stores and on the ice cream ones at Dairy Queen. Happy first on top and Birthday second on the bottom

Happy behind.
The eye sees the Happy as "above" Birthday, as if it was written on paper.
