Yes, it is true ! Not a fable !
There is a saying in Chinese that goes " Anything that stands on four feet can be eaten by mankind".
Well I guess snake doesn't have legs but really anything that is considered an animal can be eaten by the Chinese standard.
A bit disturbing but well, snake actually taste like chicken because I have tried it !
I find anything rats, cats and dogs quite disgusting though !

I have several travel DVDs about Vietnam and snakes is an usual meal they eat. But to say its not cheap thou. What they often do is cut the snake neck ( Well, around their throat) and then get the blood out in a cup, sometimes they want to get the heart too and eat the heart raw rigth then and there. They do drink the blood also.
I know one of the reason for eating raw stuffs like that is they believe that makes men got more energy and it helps for their sexual erection...stuffs like that.
Rats? They eat those too.
Bats now are also served in some restaurant.
Frogs are no longer "new" to them. Frogs taste like chicken.
Thailand serve all kinds of insects like grasshopper, croach, crickets...(mostly deep fried).
How about deep fried scorpios? They're eaten too.
Wait, has anyone here heard about some CHinese men eating new born babies? I hope that was just a rumor.

Yes, not only China. Some Asian countries eat snakes and field mice. Korea and China eat dogs to keep them warm during winter. I read about an article that Korean use the meat of Saint Bernard to make sausages as they are big and meaty. This is real cruel! :-(

I dont know about China, but in some asian countries yes they do. Sometimes when food is in short supply, you do what you have to do, and after a time, it just becomes the norm. Some people in the US eat snake too, and Alligator, Frog legs... for example.

Rats, very very rare; snakes more often. But both of them are not common food in China. If you wanna know more about real China, see this: http://knows.jongo.com

I do know that my dad was in china and he watched the man cut the head off the snake, catch the blood in a glass, drink that, then eat the snake. this was maybe 25 years ago.....
I don't know about rats. but I know people who eat squirrels in this country (gak!) so why wouldn't someone eat rats? (double gak) (they were from KY and I worked with them.)

True.
People have been eating rats and snakes all over the world forever. The Chinese also eat DOG! So do Koreans...North Koreans will eat anything because their stupid "leader" is helping them starve to death!
The Romans used to eat rat all the time. They wrote about it, too.
