If your wife's cough is blood tinged, she could probably stand to wait until her Primary doctors office is open and make a same day appointment, If your wife doesn't have a primary care doctor, find one. The ER is for emergent conditions that threaten life or limb. If your wife is throwing up blood or coughing mostly blood, then please take her in, as these are symptoms of a more serious condition, as are night sweats, wt loss, fever along with hemoptysis(coughing up blood)

If you cough up blood, it comes from your lungs or (perhaps) your throat. It's probably just from coughing too hard. Personally, I'd consider the first time a curiosity and the second time a warning that something is seriously wrong. You never know when the third time will come or how bad it will be. I have known people to die from hemoptysis, so you decide if it's serious or not. It's not the kind of thing you can just put a Band Aid on and hold under pressure until it stops.

You can ~probably~ wait and see, but that's your call. It depends on how much actual blood she coughed up.

You can use "hemoptysis" as a search term and find thousands of articles on the subject.

You can also go directly to http://www.pulmonologychannel.com/hemoptysis/ which I find to be an excellent review that should help you in your decision.

It could be from coughing too much, however if I were you, yes I would go to the ER. Rather sitting there a few hours but get all the test's done at once, instead of going to the doctor and then he sends you here and there, maybe tomorrow or a week from today. Don't fool around with blood.

I am a respiratory therapist. If the blood is coming from the lungs, then you should already be on your way to the ER. It is true your throat can get raw, or possibly your sinuses, and cause blood tinged sputum, but if you want to be safe, find out where the blood is coming from. It would not be a bad idea to go to an urgent care facility anyway for some antibiotics. Hope she feels better soon!

I would be concerned of she was coughing large amounts of bright red blood. If she is doing this Go to the ER ASAP. If she is coughing up dark colored blood don't be too concerned because this is old blood and is just trying to get out of her lungs.

If what she has coughed up is just barely streaked with a little blood it is not likely to be that problematic, but if most of her coughs are bringing up mucus that contains blood I would definitely get her checked out by her physician. If it is more than a small amount of blood, go to the emergency room.

At the very least, it might be a nosebleed. At the very worst, it might be a serious lung problem.

Either way (and anywhere in between), coughing up blood should be taken seriously, even though it may not be.

It usually indicates at least a little bleeding in your respiratory tract somewhere between your nose and the bottom of your lungs.

See a doc 2 b on safe side.

It could be from coughing to hard but it could be also a serious problem like pneumonia. Go to the ER and get her checked out.
Good Luck to and your wife

That can happen when you cough too much, but she needs to go to the ER and have it checked. They can also give her a treatment, and something for the cough.
