Pain. There are two communication systems in the human body, the nervous system and the hormonal (a.k.a chemical) system. Many chemical messangers share a common pathway. In your case, pain causes the release of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins affect different parts of the body, including the thalamus. The effects on the thalamus is to raise the body temperature. Another example, you suffer an infection which releases prostaglandin, causing localized pain and inflammation as well as causing a fever. Ibuprofen is one of many drugs which inhibit the production of prostaglandins, which is why it is a great pain reliever and reduces fevers.
