my dad did a small hospital stay a few months ago for a small stroke and his blood sugar was 450. since then he has lost over 100 pounds and off the insulin. his blood sugar is around 80-90 and still under 100 after he eats. is this too low? i've heard both sides( just right and too low). he does get these dizzy spells often when we work. does this cause them. he is 6ft tall and 240 pounds now if this helps.

No, it's perfect. Under 70 would be too low.

Dizzy spells have more to do with circulation. He can improve that with exercise and a neat supplement called "pycnogenol". Oh, I just remembered.... ginkgo biloba will help brain circulation too.

Congratulate him on his weight loss and getting diabetes under control. Too bad more people can't learn from this.

The blood sugar average varys from person to person. Per the medical books they say you need to be between 80 and 120. If your dad is having dizzy spells you should take his blood sugar at that time to see what it is. Also since he has lost so much weight in a short period of time he may need to eat 5 to 6 small meals a day and always keep candy in his pocket or near by. I hope this helps.

Hi. What type of diabetes? Type 1 or 2? And i was told when i was first diagnosed, (8 years ago) that it should be between:
80-140
BUT
at the same time, its different for anyone. If he's used to high blood counts then u need to help him get back in range so his body doesn't get used to dizzy spells at a normal blood count. Hope that helped.

Normal Values:-
Levels up to 100 mg/dL are considered normal.
Levels between 100 and 126 mg/dl are referred to as impaired fasting glucose or pre-diabetes. These levels are considered to be risk factors for type 2 diabetes and its complications.
Diabetes is typically diagnosed when fasting blood glucose levels are 126 mg/dl or higher.
Note: mg/dL = milligrams per deciliter. To convert Blood Glucose readings:- Divide the mg/dL by 18 to get mmol/L. Multiply the mmol/L by 18 to get mg/dL.
