Yup.

Cold sores are typically caused by herpes simplex virus 1. But, they can also be caused by herpes simplex virus 2, which is usually genital herpes.

There are actually 8 different kinds of the herpes simplex virus. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herpesviridae

Simplex virus 1 is usually found on and around the mouth. Simlex virus 2 is found around the genital area. However, both can be tranfered to either areas. In the cold sores beginning stages (shedding), you can tranfer the simplex virus to someone not infected, without even knowing you had a cold sore. Also, when you have a cold sore, just remember to wash your hands before and after you go to the bathroom. Recent studies have shown that you can actually tranfer the virus from your mouth to your genitals, just by going to the bathroom.
Even though the virus is around the genitals, it's not considered genital herpes. And you won't have the same breakouts as someone with the simplex virus 2 would.
Just be very carefull with cold sores. Trust me, they're more contagious than what we were all led to believe.

I got clinically diagnosed with herpes virus (type 2) about 4 years back, when I was still attending college and had a dumb one-night stand. I understand loads of people say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a massive mistake that one time and all of a sudden it seemed like I was going to have to live with the implications for the rest of my life. The worst part was feeling I could never date other men again. After all, who wants to go out with a girl who has sores round her "you know what" area? But since a friend shared this movie https://tr.im/3rFEx everything improved.

Not only was I able to clear away all remnants of the herpes virus from my system in less than 21 days, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so fortunate to write that just a week ago, in front of everyone in a busy restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me! This program provided the chance to be happy and experience real love again. Now I hope that I can help others too by sharing this story.

It varies. Sometimes, a cold sore or fever blister is brought on by an irritation (maltreatment of lips in the cold months, the wrong foods, overly dried lips, saliva remaining on the skin outside the lips for an extended period of time, even sunburn) Other times, it is a form of Herpes.
But of course, there are lots of forms of Herpes that nobody knew was Herpes to begin with. Chickenpox, for example, is a form of Herpes. Just about everyone has, has had, or will have some kind of Herpes infection by the end of their life time.
If you are worried about contracting this type of Herpes, just be sure not to let anyone with an apparent cold sore/fever blister touch their lips to any area of your body, because even if it isn't Herpes, it will still give you your own cold sore/fever blister because of the bacteria.
If you are worried that you already have it, analyze your frequency and causes of your sores. Do they occur frequently or occasionally? Is it a cycle or a season? Getting one or two a year, especially in summer or winter isn't anything to worry about. But do you get these sores routinely, like monthly, bimonthly and so forth? If they typically occur in a cycle, then yes, it is quite possible that you do have Herpes. If not, then you mostly likely don't.
If you know you have it, then just be as careful as possible not to spread it by letting your lips come into contact with another person's body.
For treatment of sores in general, if you have a cold sore/fever blister just rub a specially formulated ointment or balm on it. If that doesn't work, and with Herpes it usually doesn't, rub triple antibiotic on it.

Hope I've helped!

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

Actually most sores in the mouth are caused by food irritations.

I was getting a sore on the inside of my lip a couple of years ago, and told my doctor about it. He had me write down my snacking habbits on a calendar, and when I did I saw that everytime I had a sore...several days prior I was drinking beer and eating nuts.
(Pistachios, Peanuts, Cashews).
I read up on Cashews and found that they are poisonous in nature and that they caused food reactions to some people).
When I stopped eating them my sore went away and never came back. My doctor also said that the salt could be a major factor also.

Yes HSV-1 and colds sores are the same thing...If you get it below the belt it's HSV-2.
People fear Genital HSV2 more then Cold Sore/Lip HSV1.....don't know why they are basically the same.
