I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes at age 39, six years ago and this summer went on Lantus insulin once a day. I want to get completely off all the meds I am on. I want to talk to someone who has actually done it. Anyone out there a former user of insuling, glucophage and avandia who is now controlling it just with diet and exercise. I am soooo down about being on insulin and want to make some drastic changes. need advice. maybe even alternative medicine advice. thanks.

At one time I controlled my diabetes with diet & exercising 35 or more minutes TWICE a day. I took no oral meds and had my lantus down to 10 or less a day. I suppose at that time I could have switched fromlantus back to glucophage but then other health issues kicked in & knocked me for a loop. the diet is, 2 milk, 3 oil, 4 fruit, 5 protein, 6 starch, 7 vegies, 8 waters--these are "exchanges" several dieting orgs, like weight watchers use or used to use the exhange program. Good luck. & hang in there.

If you're overweight, it's highly likely that you can get off of your meds by losing weight and keeping it off. My husband had type II diabetes and lost 40 lbs and his sugars are perfect now.

It may be possible but you should discuss this with your Endocrinologist (and please tell me you have one) who can advise you as the wisdom and feasibility of doing this as well as help you get started.
