I have come to learn that several different factors affect the amount of time you should place a potato in the microwave. Perhaps that is why you can't get an agreed consensus from your friends.

Here's what you'll want to consider from my own personal experience.

First, something which you may already know, is that the size of the potato is going to affect the cook time. Along with that, the power of your microwave is also going to affect cook time.

Second, and NOT so well known, is that the TYPE of potato will affect cook time. A basic brown idaho potato (that is marketed as the ideal "baking potato"), 4-6 inches long and about 2 inches wide, SHOULD take anywhere from 4-6 minutes. Smaller should take a little less time, larger might take around 7-10 minutes. If you try to cook more than one at a time, you'll need to increase the time accordingly: i.e. - one takes 5 minutes, so two will take around 10, and three around 15....

I have come to find that Russet potatoes DO NOT cook well in the microwave. Once, I resorted to cubing four Russets that i'd already nuked for 15 minutes... and nuked them for 25 MORE MINUTES and they STILL weren't "cooked". A few more similar occurances like that and I've avoided using russets in the microwave since then.

Red Potatoes seem to be hit or miss. My experience has been that, if I cook a small number of them or just one, they cook in about 5 - 7 minutes. If I try to cook up a larger number of potatoes (for a dinner party), they behave like russets and would probably have cooked faster roasting in my oven than they did sitting in my microwave.

So... there you have it. I could be completely nuts, but hey, it's a possible explanation as to why YOUR potato wouldn't "cook".

Good luck!

I would try cutting the potato into smaller pieces before placing in the microwave for a couple of minutes, check and if still hard, another couple of mins until you can easily run a cutting knife right through. You obviously don't want it too soft though. I think the other guys idea of finishing the cooking in a standard oven is a good idea if you would like it to have a nice brown crust. You could smeer a bit of virgin olive oil on it first.

With some microwaves:

Prick the potato, set it on a paper towel, nuke for 5 minutes, depending on it's size. I think here, a medium sized potato is used.
Then, when it's finished, wrap it in foil for another 5 minutes..
unwrap, butter and enjoy.

Now, there are microwaves that do have a potato button.
I have an older microwave, and a newer one

I usually put it into the mircrowave for 6 mins but it depends on the heat that you have mine was 650kw if yours is less and your potatoes is bigger than it would have to stay in there for longer. If the microwave has a heat of 800kw then the potatoe would be in there for a shorter time

If you really want a baked potato it must be finished off in the oven.Give it 5 minutes in the microwave to cook the centre then put it in a hot oven for 30 minutes.Serve with butter, prawns, coleslaw or whatever else you love.
The other delicious way is to roll it in foil and put in the thick ash under a camp fire.
I know these things are old fashioned but they taste so much better,

I microwave my potatoe for 7 minutes..comes out just the way I like it...It depends on your microwave too, if it is an older model it might take longer, another factor too is, how many potatoes you put in at one time, that can take much longer, also.

all depends on the potato and microwave, if potato is fresh, start 4 mins, check with fork, and 1 min at time and recheck....

Start with eight min's. and don't forget to poke holes in them all over before you put them in so they don't explode and helps cooks them faster, also place a wet paper towel over them to help with, we'll I don't know what is does but I was taught to do it. Check with fork, they will be to hot to touch with hand, after that and determine if they need a few more mins or not.
