When I was in HCMC I ate a huge (football size) ball made of ground rice then fried til it puffs up with air. The waitress bashed it down with a plate and then cut it up to eat dipped in chilli sauce. It isn't a dessert, it's an accompaniment. It was slightly sweet and chewy.
Anyone know the name of this dish?

It is indeed made of sticky rice, you have to cook it first, then deep fry it. The Vietnamese name is 'xoi chien phong'. Haven't seen it here tho...
