Why is this is the Veggie and Vegan section ?

MCD's french fries use beef fat as flavouring. No veggie or vegan can eat them

McDonald's gets all of their potatoes from the western US (Montana, Idaho). They are sprayed with lots of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. The rings that the potatoes are grown in are affectionately called "crop circles" by the farmers because they are round and everything is dead except the potatoes.

They are warehoused for months before being made into the french fries that you eat. McDonald's only uses vegetable oil to fry those yummy chemical sticks. Several years ago McDonald's got in hot water with the Muslim community over the use of a blended animal/veg oil so they instituted a change to pure vegetable.

Probably more than you ever wanted to know.

Happy eating! Enjoy those fries!

On the genetically engineered front, they tried to use them and when people found out their business went down. They are back to standard russet potatoes, no more genetic engineering, only pesticides, etc.

There are Mc Donalds in almost every country so they get their potatoes from different locations.

Depending on who you believe, they either use good old Russet Burbank taters from Idaho or genetically engineered spuds:

Most of the copycat recipe sites indicate that Russet Burbanks are what McDonald's fries are made of. The other claim -- well, who knows?

It depends on what country you're buying the McFries in,

and,

that also goes for the beef fat -- last I looked, it was no longer used in the US, but still is in Canada; not sure about other countries.

As for 'why are they so famous,' I'm going to have to say successful marketing.

I don't know where they get the potatoes. But their fries are famous because of MSG!

Actually they stopped using beef fat, they are cooked in vegatable oil, not that it makes em any healthier
