Pearl tea, or bubble tea or boba tea as it is usually called in the United States, is one of my favorite drinks. Unfortunately, it's not very well known, and most of the places that serve it make it from some kind of powdered mix rather than a base of actual tea. My favorite flavor is Thai tea, but I also like the green tea and jasmine varieties.

For any of you who haven't heard of pearl tea, it is a sweet drink that is very popular in the orient. It is made with tea and milk, and is sweetened and usually flavored. Flavors range from traditional tea varieties (green tea, black tea) to exotic fruit and floral flavors (strawberry, coconut, jasmine). In the tea are "pearls" which are beads of tapioca that are about the size of a chickpea. The tapioca pearls are mostly flavorless and are chewy, with a texture similar to a gummy bear. They come in several colors, black and clear being the most common. The drink is served with a special straw which is extra-wide so that you suck up the pearls as you drink the tea.
