the steal can was a symbol of strength, and his ability to squish the steal can open with his bare hand was a chance to signal his upcoming strength. A bag just would not do well at symbolizing toughness, and it would not show off much strength to open it with bare hands.

I wish I could give him that much credit, but based on his grammar and rhetoric, he may not even be bright enough to read the newspaper and hear about the e coli outbreak. I think it's more likely that he probably just ate canned spinach because it was the easiest thing to carry all the time and it would have a long expiration period.

Popeye ate spinach cause back then there were no such thing as steroids....which was good because Popeye's testies were normal sized!
