Aspiration Pneumonia is caused by anything foreign, entering the lungs in large quantity. This could include vomit entering the lungs, or more commonly a backup of liquid feeding into the lungs via a J-tube/ Peg tube/ NG tube ---with a pump.

The easiest way to solve this problem is bolus feedings several times a day through any of the above tubes. It can be done, but takes allot of extra time, so most health care institutions have gotten away from it, except for administering medications. It also will not insure that there will never be a "backup" and aspiration again, but will keep the aspiration to a minimum.

if someone is prone to having aspiration pneumonia, upright positioning while eating helps, avoiding talking while eating, speech therapists can teach how to swallow...and not breath at the same time.......

Eating with the HOB upright, thicken liquids and consult a speech therapist.

by not having things like endotracheal tubes, ng tubes, peg tubes
by not trying to breath when you vomit

in essence these are situations that are accidental, it happens when it has to, good luck
