I have been taking it for about two years now. I just take 500mg once in the morning. I never really noticed any side effects from it. It is really hard to say though, I take a number of other meds for high blood pressure also. I do have a few side effects from those, but The Metformin never really bothered me.
I was taking 500mg twice a day when I first started taking it, but with a good steady diet of avoiding refined sugars I was able to step down to just once a day.
Look at it this way.... Taking the pills beats the alternative of having to inject insulin.

Try to limit your carbs, and sugars, and perhaps your levels will recede enough so you can cut back on the Metformin. If you are having negative side effects, talk to your doctor about it. There are a number of other meds that they can use to lower blood glucose levels.

I wish you well. God Bless.

No, I've never had problems with Metformin and I've been on it at 1000 mg. in the morning and another 1000 at night for years now.

I take two metformin twice a day, so four in total I also take Amaryl. I find when it's hot and very humid I can be shaky and tired. Eat smaller meals, watch your intake of aspertane and some people's levels of good glucose readings are higher than what the docs think . I've never been below a 5.1 and if I'm that I'm very shaky and feel nauseaus. My levels are between 7 and 11 and that's my normal. I have other conditions that affect me. So I'd consult with your doc and diabetic dietician and see if they can help.

My doctor took me off Avandia, which WORKED for me (he thought it was causing my feet to swell) and put me on Metformin. Not only did it not work, it allowed my blood sugar to skyrocket to the point I had to use insulin. We discovered, or I should say I did, that the stuff wasn't being processed by my body at all. I would take the pills, half an hour later, they were in the commode. The doctor said, that's ok, your body got what it was supposed to out of them and passed it, and even though it looked all right, it was just a hollow shell - the pill I mean. I guess I'm just not a believer. I fished one out with the cat litter scoop, put it in a plastic bag, and carried it to him the next time. It WASN'T just a hollow shell, it was an entire pill - they were just sort of 'falling through' without being any use at all. Whoopsie.

I'm wondering if you're having some problems and wondering if they're related to Metformin.
One of my exes was on Metformin and I remember her having trouble with it but don't remember specifically what the problem was, so I guess I'm not too much help that way. But I don't think there's any drug without some kind of side effects. Try asking your doctor or pharmacist if you're having some kind of trouble, or reading the literature they gave you. And if you keep having the trouble, even though they tell you it's not related, try asking someone else. My mother took something that had a side-effect of systematic arthritis, which happened to her, but it was such a rare side effect that her doctor told her it wasn't a side effect. She only found out when she mentioned it to her pharmacist, and he found it listed in the last paragraph of five full pages of side effects.

metformin is one of the most common drugs used to treat Tryp 2 diabetes. There are a few side effects as with anything. Check the info sheet that came with it from the drug store. Sounds like you may need to try it in conjuction with another med. Ask your doctor.

My sister takes it and she has to eat before or gets a really upset
stomach and she has to eat regularly & about the same time & have small snacks or she starts getting shaky and weak. That lasts for about 24 hours if it starts.

It didn't work well for me so I switched to ACTOS and that solved all my problems.
