You have to try this place...

Phoenix Palace
5, Glentworth St, London, NW1 5PG
Tel: 020 7486 3515
Nearest tube station... Baker Street. 2 mins walk.

Voted in the top 5 Chinese Restaurants in London. Very nice inside and polite staff. Used by all sorts of VIP's etc (they have photo's on their wall). Reasonably priced considering.

In fact, i might go back next week now i'm thinking about it. Mmmm.

P.S. I dont work for them....

Firstly, if you are serious about chinese food which you are.....please don't go to Wong Kei's on Wardour Street as recommended [and the correct pronounciation is not "one keys"!] - I have been there a few times a long time ago, yes their service is bad and the food is just OK - nothing special...if you were a tourist than you might want to go there for an "experience" - but as someone who'll be living in London for a couple of months you need a good chinese restaurant!
Here are some that I like:

Chinatown -
Jade Garden on Wardour Street - good for Dim Sum
Harbour City on Gerard Street

Royal China in Queensway - really good food with great black and gold interior and atmosphere.....very popular so make reservations or get there early to queue!

Chinatown has many and you'll be here long enough to pick which ones you like the look of and findout by yourself......

...and if you find yourself in Manchester!? - you must go to Yang Sing!

Happy eating.

My advice would be go to leicester square and take a walk to china town.

Not only will you be right in the middle of more chinese restaurants than you can shake a stick at (I have been to a lot of them and have yet to have a bad meal), but you are also surrounded by some great sights, some great little shops filled with some of the strangest/best/funniest products you have ever seen, and the atmosphere is good.

Then theres a whole host of theatres/bars/clubs nearby (you can either walk or get a train one stop to most places) if you fancy carrying on that night...

Fung Shing in Chinatown is one of the best, there is also a very upmarket chain called Zen which has about 5 outlets scattered all around town all MSG free. Be prepared for the fact that Chinese food varies considerably from country to country, I now live in New York and the type of Chinese cuisine here is vastly different from that in London.

To the muppet who joked about China, I have lived there and 90% of Chinese restaurants in China produce food that would be inedible to a westerner.

Won Ki's in Leicester Square.
It's pronounced One Keys.

That's a superb chinese restaurant, the staff treat the customers like dirt and are very rude, but the food is fantastic and a lot of chinese people eat there, so you know the food is ok. Just don't go expecting good service because you'll be disappointed. It has got a reputation for this treatment of customers. If you can ignore that, the food is superb.

Yes, you can walk randomly around Chinatown to try, but given you're from San Francisco and are a Chinese foodie, I wouldn't recommend that experience if you only have 2 months in London. :-) I moved from Cali myself and have been here 6 years.

Dim Sum in Chinatown:
Great all-around - http://www.imperial-china.co.uk/
Bargain lunch - http://www.london-eating.co.uk/archives/2004/1/4218.asp

Also, not in Chinatown, trendy and delicious - http://www.pingpongdimsum.com/

Couple of Szechuan restaurants (one which I recommended earlier):

Highly recommended (less known than chinatown, but Chinese foodies know where to go ;-) is Queensway (just north of Hyde Park)

I like
- Four Seasons, for home cooking cantonese and the best roast duck and char-siu
- Royal China, classic and extensive menu, the one I take friends/family to for special occasions
- Mandarin Kitchen, best lobster noodle. Also serves drunken chicken.

That should get you by over the next 2 months. Enjoy your stay!

Eucali gave you good advice! Here are my top picks for value and quality as a Hong Konger:

1) Four Seasons - Bayswater Tube
2) Magic Wok - Bayswater Tube
3) Young Cheng - Chinatown (Leicester Sq. Tube)
4) TPT - Chinatown (Leicester Sq. Tube)

Rose Garden in Coulsdon, Hidden Dragon in Richmond, Wing Yip in Croydon, pretty much any of them on Gerrard Street, or Lisle Street near Leicester Square, or any on Queensway.

Try China Town in Leicester Square. There are many Chinese restaurants, and they are all fine.
