I was raised on a farm, we had to kill the meat we ate. I personally could not stand chopping their heads off with an ax or wringing their necks (chickens). Second reason is because when buying hamburger I have more than once bit into a hard chunk of bone or gristle and that freaks me out.The next time you buy 80% ground beef, ask the butcher what is the other 20% and tell him you want the truth.( I also had to help cut up beef and pork) I grew up fishing and started thinking about the worms that they were eating off my fishing pole. Yuk. I just can't eat meat. And as much as you love a good steak, i love salads and vegetables and pasta. Give me a portabella mushroom burger any day. I haven't tried tofu yet. :o)

Some people don't eat meat for health reasons. An example would be people who suffer from PKU. These people have a genetic inabiity to process one of the essential animo acids and if they eat high protein foods such as meat, eggs, dairy, etc. they could eventually become mentally retarded.
Some people don't eat meat or certain meats based on faith. Jews who keep kosher are not allowed to eat meats that do no come from animals that chew their own cud and have cloven hooves. That is why pork is not a kosher meat. Hindus believe the cow to be a sacred animal because of all that it does for humans so they do not eat beef or drink cow's milk.
Some people don't eat meat based on the belief that animals deserve good treatment too. I think it is so hard for non-vegetarians in the USA to accept vegetarians because we have a very meat rich diet here. If you were to visit India, for example, you would be in the minority eating meat.
I am with you though. I don't think I could ever give up eating meat; I find it to be absolutely delicious. And by the way, just a little tidbit of information, medium rare is the best way to eat your steaks. The body to absorbs the most nutrients at that temperature.

In Jan 05 I decided to do a colon cleanse. The one I decided on strongly suggested that you stay away from some foods while doing the cleanse. It was for three months and I made the decision to do it correctly so I gave up meat.
I felt so good after the cleanse that I started to research the benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle. I stayed away from meats for an additional 3 months and then started giving up all animal proteins ergo becoming a vegan.
I have high cholesterol and I am on medicine for it and have been for over 15 years. I went off the medicine, without the doctors knowledge and waited an additional 3 months before getting my levels checked.
My numbers went up. I was devastated and went out and ate a good old burger and continued to animal proteins for a week. I felt sluggish, my skin broke out and my colon was suffering.
So, my reason is because I feel soooo much better when I eat a vegan diet.

Basically, I do like animals, I started feeling guilty for eating meat and hating the taste of it at around about the same time!!
It ended up tasting like sucking a coin , plus felt like a murderess, it is a personal choice however. It is up to you alone if want to eat meat. You say you aren't bothered about ethical treatment for animals and that the PETA video didn't bother you.
You should have no problem reading 'Fast Food Nation' by Eric Schlosser and being unmoved!! It made me reel and I was already a veggie at the time!!!
I won't quote from the book about the U.S. slaughterhouses 'cos it's Friday and some of us carrot crunchers may be sitting here with a Tofu burger or piece of vegan pizza in our free hands !!!
if you can read that book and still want to eat meat then at the end of the day, I applaud you for sticking to your principals!!! I won't be joining you. Contrary to what Foxhunter_guy thinks I'm not trying to convert anyone he just keeps posting stupid questions on here.

I don't think you should be criticising people for having compassion just because you clearly don't have much of that for either animals or humans. You shouldn't be telling anyone to shut up on here. You have your opinions and we have ours. I personally don't eat meat because I care about animals and the environment, and I cant bear to eat anything that has suffered. Also it's proven healthier not to eat meat, as meat is full of saturated fat and takes hours to digest so it rots in the intestines for hours, even days causing no end of problems. No thank you, I'd rather stick to grains, fruit, soya and veg and know I'm doing animals, the environment and my health a huge favour.
As I said you have your opinion, but it's sad that you care so little about animals that are suffering. Maybe one day the tables would be turned...I can see you as a good candidate for the next Planet of The Apes film as a suffering human!

I have always had a respect for every living thing - including trees . I began eating vegetarian when camping.. I still don't have the complete hang of it, but that may be because I'm married to a hunter, and have 2 sons..and a ton of grandsons. Sort of like a salmon swimming upstream really..
I am slowly getting back into it, because of my diabetes.. as I plan to live long enough to see my grandsons graduate from college, get married, have children.. etc.
I use to say I was shooting for 86 . I'm now shooting for 103, and once there, maybe I'll go further.
My hubby and I no longer eat beef, as he's became extremely allergic to it. Raised hives - almost like welts - throat closes.. even with organic beef.
Do we still eat meat, yes.. but we're getting better.

You might think the best food is a steak, I personally love bean nachos or a vege-burger packed with tomato sauce and mustard, mmm.
I gave up eating meat when I moved out of home. I did not like preparing raw meat, and I made the connection that this 'meat' was flesh. It made me feel sick.
So I gave up meat purely because I was grossed out. It was then that I did some research about being a Vegetarian and I realised it suited my life-style, beliefs, and would enhance my health.
What I HATE is meat-eaters bagging vegetarians. I, do not sit down at dinner and make comments about people's meat dishes, so I don't think you should bag people's tofu!

Why are you telling joyce to shut up? Just because animals can be eaten doesn't mean they are here for people to eat them, it just means that people can eat them. That's like arguing that if I am big enough to beat the snot out of someone then I was meant to beat the snot out of them and that's what I should be doing.
About a fourth of my diet used to be meat. I stopped eating all meat about 12 years ago. This means fish, chickens, etc. as well as cows and the like. Any animal (so that includes creatures like snakes and insects). Two reasons. 1) Because it's healthier. 2) Because I've come to adopt the philosophy of Budism for the most part.
I don't miss meat at all and I would probably choke on a steak if I ever had to try to eat one now. And I don't have to worry about mad cow disease or the stupid hormones all of the animals are pumped up with.
Sounds like you might like Soylent Green.

I`m a vegetarian because a. I feel so guilty killing animals just to stuff my stumich and b. I get sick eating all that fat. Why do humans view animals as nothing that we can walk all over with no feelings. the way that we raise animals in factory farms are 1. cruel 2. bad for the environment 3. it destroys small coops of farmaers that at one time made a living from raising animals kindly for food.... ect. the that animals are raised is the problem. I don`t plan on making you vegetarian but don`t be so ignorant and look at some cold hard facts. before you judge!!!!!

I found out about the state of the animal when it gets killed and it goes into its blood and we can eat this if the meat is not drained as in Kosher meat. This didn't sit to well with me knowing this information. I now know that I can eat Kosher meat or organic but that costs a bit of money so it is occasionally that I do this.
