How old are you? I guess you are young and probably you are having what is called a supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). The Toprol XL will help, although I'd rather put you on Metoprolol twice a day (which is almost the same as the Toprol XL, only it's not that long lasting). An SVT is a benign arrhythmia -assuming this is what you have- and is treated either by medications that slow your heart rate, like Toprol. Or you can have a procedure done, named "ablation", which is an electric cautherization of part of your heart's electrical conduction system. Of course, this is a much complicated thing to do, but it's very effective.
I don't know why you don't want to take the Toprol, because it'll definitely help you. There is usually no "cure" for the arrhythmia, you will always have it unless you undergo the ablation procedure. However the Toprol will keep you from having most episodes of tachycardia, or it could even prevent you from having them. So, unless you had a bad reaction to the medication I would advise to take it, as simple as that. And also try to avoid stimulants, like coffee, tea, stress, which may trigger an episode of tachycardia.
One way to stop the tachycardia episodes on your own is to do a "Valsalva maneuver" which basically consists in straining (like when you go to poop and have to push... sorry for the example). It helps many times in stopping an episode, however it's not a substitute for the medication, ok?
Of course there are other kinds of arrhythmias, that require different treatments. Have you been told which arrhythmia you have?
Any other question, mail me.

I read an article from a woman who wrote about her husbands arrhythmia. She said when her husbands arrhythmia was at its worst he would get up to urinate many times during the night. He could not sleep whether from nerves on the affliction.By morning he would be like a limp rag sometimes to the point of staggering to the bathroom and back.Blood pressure meds, heart pills, shocking his heart all seemed to be very little help. The different drugs they tried caused numerous problems such as dry skin, dry mouth, swollen and painful jaw, the list goes on and on. They also wanted to put my husband on a drug which listed lung problems, liver problems, kidney problems, pancreas problems and thyroid problems.Needless to say we did not go the drug route.Instead we tried a vitamin supplement called CoQHeart sold in the United States in Canada it is called Coenzyme Q10 We were amazed with the results his condition has already improved some. His episodes had been occuring at the rate of 3 or more a week. The gradually were reduced number of recurrences and in severity. He has now gone over a week and the last one was 10 days ago My husband takes 2-3 CoQHeart a day My husband hadbeen sucked into a downward spiral that wasn't going to end. I believe he would not have lasted 10 years if he had gone on that drug. I believe that he would have lived a very restricted life, he never felt like moving. Now he works out 3 times a week and is doing more than he has done in years.

I suppose that all of us do the great we will be able to headquartered on our potential/information and "the hand we are dealt". Although incorrect offerings are generally made, probably the most sincere rationalization it is easy to ever provide is, "It gave the impression of a well suggestion on the time." We inhabit a rock that hurtles by way of house at top speeds round a ball of fireside. It's type of comical whilst you consider approximately it. The factor is, we're all in this flying rock in combination and no one has any manage over the course it takes, and our lives rely on this rock maintaining its path across the fireball and now not getting too near or too some distance away. We don't have any manage over the massive matters, so we attempt to manage small matters to alleviation ourselves with the phantasm that the small matters truthfully make a change. I recognise that sounds type of pessimistic, however I've located that with recognition comes peace. As people, we generally tend to tackle burdens and maintain ourselves in charge for matters which are out of our manage. Can you steer the Earth? I cannot.

I have arrhythmia's too. I would continue to take your medication as your doctor directed and make an appointment with a different doctor for a second opinion. Arrhythmia's are not something to be played with. Trust me i know from experience. i had to have a pacemaker and defibrillator implanted when i was only 20. My doctor wanted to give me one at 15 years old and i was stubborn and refused so i took inderal until it quit working. I am very lucky to be alive today at 32. Ask questions, study your condition, be your own advocate!!! Best of luck to you.

To answer your question, I would have to know what kind of arrythmia you are having.
You are taking a very low dose of Toprol XL, which is a sustained released tablet used to reduce your heart rate.
Ok, so whats the deal? Why dont you want to take it?

If you are concerned and want a second opinion regarding your hear condition please make an appointment with a cardiologist. Getting medical advice on this site is probably not your best bet.
