Vegetarians have different levels. There are ovo-vegetarians, who eat no meat, dairy, or fish, but eat eggs. There are lacto-vegetarians who eat no eggs, meat, or fish, but eat dairy. Then there are Pisco-vegetarians who eat fish, but none of the other stuff. Then you have ovo-lacto-pisco vegetarians who just abstain from eating meat from land animals. Vegans eat none of the above. We ONLY eat plant derived products. Hope that helped. :)

Vegetarians opt out of eating anything prepared with meat. No hamburgers or steaks for these guys. This also applies to products derived from meat, such as broths or stocks, that their food may have been cooked in without actually becoming a principal part of the meal.
Vegans don't eat any product of an animal whatsoever, such as gelatin and gelatin products (Which are made from bones, though there is a gelatin available made from kelp),milk (which is a product of cows), cheese (again a product of cows, further down the ladder. See where I'm going?), or anything which can be traced back to an animal.

I was a vegetarian for 4 years and just this past week began eating meat again. You can expect a large amount of prejiduce and people joking with you and trying to convince you to eat meat. Ocassionally they'll lie to you to get you to eat it telling a certian dish doesn't have meat in it when it actually does. Expect that every time you eat with a new person they will ask you why youre vegetarian and what prompted the decision. So come up with a story to tell people and stick with it. People are not going to take you as seriously, and quite frankly you are going to annoy a lot of people with your dietary choices. Especially if you have a meat eating family. My recommendation is to try it out for a year or so and see how you like it. I think you find its a lot more trouble than its worth. There are really no benifits socially or physically. Find another way to "meat" haha women. They are a large number of unattractive vegetarians as well.

Vegans consume no animal products - that's no to every type of meat as well dairy and eggs and things such as gelatin which contain animal products.
A vegan is a vegetarian though - I think you're talking ovo-lacto vegetarians who eat dairy and eggs, but no meat.

Vegan is the more strict of the two. They choose only plant based foods (won't eat honey, either as it's meant to benefit bees). In addition, they make choices such as not wearing leather, fleece, etc. Here's a good Q&A site for you...
