Whenever I go out to a sushi bar I always see at least one or two people eat only the toppings like salmon, crab salad, etc...and they just leave the sushi rice on the plate. Why? I think they should just ask the wait staff if they can specially make them dishes without the rice instead of wasting food. Don't you think so? I'm sure the sushi chefs won't mind cause most of the time they aren't that busy when the whole sushi boat is full.

I've never seen someone do that before, that is just weird. As others have said, just order sashimi. In a true Japanese run restaurant or in Japan that would be considered very rude. Japan is such a small country and resources are so precious that to order food and then waste it by not eating it is a bad thing.

I see that too. It's silly. Especially since every sushi restaurant lets you order sashimi, which is the fish without the rice. I guess a lot of people don't really know what sashimi is.

And of course meat loving americans would leave the rice behind! I actually went to an asian buffet that had sushi, and they had signs up saying that they would charge you extra if you at the fish and not the rice.

rice is cheap and filling. if you go to an all you can eat sushi bar, the more rice you eat, the less good cuts of high quality fish you can eat. It's like going to a steak restaurant and filling up on bread

if i were eating sushi, i would want as much rice as i could fit in my mouth with each bite. i just can't bring myself to eat sushi, i think it's disgusting. i know, i'm probably the only one left. but, hey, i also don't live in orange county.

They are probably trying to avoid the carbs that are in the rice - stupid, I know, but I bet that's what it is.

Agree with the person above.

Also maybe they don't want to get too full and eat the better stuff first.

Because they're uncouth, uncivilised, and too thick to ask for sashimi instead!! (I think the first answerer got it right though, it's all those calorie conscious "slim" people..!!)
; )
