My mother-in-law has dry flaky skin and I have told her to include a little red meat in her diet for healthy skin, but she refuses. What can I do to convince her to eat a well balanced diet? I am afraid this sect she is involved in may be risking her health.

Vegans DON'T have dry flaky skin. Your mother-in-law does. First of all protein is overrated (some make people way too a big a deal about it) and second it's quite simple to meet the daily protein requirements in a vegan diet as long as calorie intake is adequte. It's recommended that vegans eat somewhere between 0.8 and 1 gram of protein per kilogram of their weight. According to this chart a 154 lb man and a 126 lb woman can get enough protein in one day. It would have to be adjusted depending on your weight but a little math won't hurt.

However vegan diets without any sort of protein supplements are not recommended for Thyroid body types. Those are the ones that are tall and thin. If your mother is one of those then she needs a higher protein intake than others and should be taking a natural plant based protein supplement and lots of Essential Fatty Acids from Flax Seed Oil, Borage Oil, and Fish Oils.

Would you like someone telling you what to eat or forcing you to eat something you didn't want to? I doubt it. What she ingests is her own business. And maybe she doesn't moisturize enough? Buy her some unrefined shea butter (www.nasabb.com) for a gift.

P.S I work for natural path nutritionist.

I have been vegan for a year and breastfeeding my 1 year old, I take supplements, eat a variety of fresh fruits/veg as well as cooked veggies and beans. Ive had my blood tested and everything is fine but the last few months I have noticed my scalp being very scaly and itchy. I use an organic shampoo and conditioner and only wash my hair once a week, rinsing it regularly... Not sure what could be causing this but I have always(since being a kid and eating a garbage diet and through my transition) had skin rash outbreaks in the summer directly related to sugar intake(natural fruit sugar). I know other vegans who can eat tons of fruit and never have this reaction so its been a frustrating thing for me.. I try my best to balance what I am eating and limit my fruit intake so my skin doesn t develop a rash but still I am noticing a flaky/itchy scalp :(

"Well balanced diet" is kinda meaningless nonsense.

As to red meat being necessary for healthy skin.... have you been paying ANY attention to the answers people give you to this almost never ending stream of invective against vegans?

'Vegan' is not a sect.

If you are not interested in the answers people give you (apart from those that have the same blinkered view as yourself) I don't see what the point is in asking these questions.

What a horrible thing to say and to say publicly! Dry skin has nothing to do with being vegan or a "sect" as you call it. She just needs a more moisturisering face/body cream. My skin always gets dry when the weather changes and being vegetarian has nothing to do with it because I had it when I used to eat meat.

Flaky, dry skin is a sign of malnutrition. Tell your mother-in-law to see a dietician that specializes in veganism. She is putting her health at risk!

I don't think red meat would really improve her skin. There are plenty of vegan lotions - buy a bottle for her.

Foxhunter, will your husband no longer eat your tube steak any more because he has decided to become a vegetarian. You really need to get a grip my friend. As for the skin tell her to rub some extra virgin olive oil on it. it is full of vitamin E.

meat has nothing to to do with healthy skin. As long as you are getting enough protein your skin will not be effected. By the way you can get all the protein you need from eating nothing but potato's.
