Modern professionals no longer say sugar is off limits. ALL carbohydrates eventually end up in your blood stream as sugar (glucose). The key is to eat a diet that is balanced. Over indulgence of ANY food is going to make you feel bad. You should see a dietician that can help you develop a meal plan that includes foods you like. They can also explain how you can occassionally substitute your carbohydrate allowances for a treat. You include, not ADD, these occassionally. You can have sugar in your coffee if you INCLUDE, not ADD it, in your meal plan. What makes sugar more challenging is that if you're allowed a certain amount of carbohydrates highly refined sugar foods like cake for instance, use up those carb allowances fast. You're not going to be satisfied eating junk, and it's going to leave you hungry, which can lead to overeating. Again, it's about balance! Exercise is even more important than diet. getting exercise daily and living an active lifestyle is going to go much further than just paying attention to what you eat. Exercise also helps your body to use insulin more efficiently, like it's supposed to work. And Type 2 and Type 1 are totally different diseases. Type 2 does not progress to Type 1. A type 2 might end up taking insulin but that doesn't change the diagnosis. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks it's own insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Type 2 is caused by insulin resistance. You make plenty of insulin but your cells are resistant to it. Insulin is the "key" that opens cell doors to glucose. If insulin is not present (like in type 1) or if the cells are resistant to it (like in type 2) glucose remain in the blood and you have diabetes. In type 2 the pancreas keeps producing more insulin to overcome the resistance, when the pancreas can no longer produce enough insulin that's when glucose begins to stay elevated. Exercise sensitizes the cells to insulin...and it also helps in weight control. Fat causes more insulin resistance. The best thing to do to keep your disease from progressing to the point of needing insulin is to acheive and/or maintain your ideal weight and exercise every day.

Type 2 does not turn into type 1. Type 1 is juvenile onset diabetes and reacts differently.
Get a glycemic index list and eat the things that have the least glycemic load. You can have a little sugar occasionally. Don't eat the whole pack of cookies (as if you would). You should get a meter and check your glucose regularly, that will let you know how you're doing on controlling it. Don't be afraid of insulin, either, it can be a life saver. Also, my doctor said about a teaspoon of cinnamon a day is good for it, as is chromium and magnesium.
Good luck!

My father has type 2 diabetes. He got it when he was 39, he is now 67. My daughter has type 1. She got it when she was 9, now she is 17. Hers is known as juvenile diabetes. You get it from birth to 21. After that is type 2. It doesn't count backwards. If an older person has type 1 it just means they got it when they were young. You can have sugar in moderated amounts. You can eat anything as long as you don't eat much of it and pay attention to your carbs.

Different foods affect diabetics differently, so it's important to test your blood glucose levels before and after meals to see how you're affected. What may send my blood glucose level through the roof may not affect someone else to that degree.

Okay, first of all, it's impossible for a type two diabetic to turn into a type one, but it is possible that later in life you'll have to go on shots.
