One of my friends is a nursing major, and she was checking everyone's radial pusle and everyone but me landed in the normal range for youth between 60-100BPM. I got around 40...and she checked five times for me, because she couldn't believe it herself. Elite athletes can get a BPM around that normally, but for someone like me: 6' 2'', 200 lbs, who exercises only recreationally, and sporadically at that...it worries me. Any ideas on why? Health concern? Potential heart problem?

That is very low, you should see your physician about this.

See a cardiologist for a thorough work-up on you, prob a cardiomyopathy can cause this slow heart rate which when symptomatic could lead you to have a pacemaker. But if youre in a clean bill of health aside from having this bradycardia,i think its not needed, you might just have a high vagal tone like most athletes have and people who exercise regularly.

Slow pulse rates:
can be normal in well-trained athletes
can indicate an electrical problem inside the heart, often called an arrhythmia. For example, an electrical problem known as third degree heart block may cause a slow pulse rate.
can indicate low thyroid hormone levels, called hypothyroidism
can be caused by several medications, such as atenolol or diltiazem, which are both often used to treat high blood pressure
can be caused by other conditions, such as increased pressure inside the skull, often called increased intracranial pressure

You need to get a check up by a professional before you jump to any conclusions. If you have an undiagnosed heart arrhythmia that 40 is inaccurate. See your doctor to be sure.

If it doesnt affect your life, then you are bradycardic by nature. Did she also check your apical pulse for 1 full minute? And how much was it coz it can differ.
you can check with a cardiologist if you having other problems.

It may be that you have an "athletic heart" and that is a normal resting heart rate. If you are having other problems, like tiredness, dizziness, syncope, you really should see your doctor.

It is most likly that your friend could not feel your pule good or in some people it is just very low. If you feel ok then there is a good chance that you are ok.
