My sister is diabetic but she is not on a strict diet. She eats whatever she wants when she wants and just takes more insuline to make up for it. I dont feel that that is safe. What should I do, is she being safe or not? Is it safe for her? I have heard that its not good to do that with your body? Thanks for your help.

im a nurse & see diabetics everyday. they never follow diet or exercise. it's ok, but have md prescribed regular insulin on a sliding scale. such as blood sugar
151-200=2u
201-250=4u
251-300=6u
301-350=8u
351-400=10u
above 400 call md
check blood sugar b4 breakfast lunch & dinner
it's safe trouble begins when blood sugars out of control all the time and diabetics do nothing and continue same routine, no insulin or forget & eat what ever they want

I don't know what kind of insulins she's taking, but if she's taking long acting insulin and then fast acting insulin with food she can eat whatever she wants....like she TOLD you, as long she gives herself the appropriate amount of insulin to cover it! She probably has been told by her DOCTOR, which is not anyone here, how many units of insulin to take per carbohydrate she eats. She counts the carbohydrates in the cake, candy, cookies, hamburger, brocolli...whatever she's eating and figures how much insulin she needs to cover them. This is called multiple daily injections, or MDI for short. If she finds that she miscalculated and her blood sugar is high later, she probably has been told how to give herself a correction. Anyone who is a type 1 diabetic...and probably a lot of type 2's on insulin...who are going to doctors or diabetes educators who are teaching you the sliding scale, do yourself a favor and find another doctor! Chasing glucose levels is NOT modern medicine and you'll get so much better control if you're either doing MDI or using an insulin pump. I'm you love your sister in law, so leave her alone! Trust me, it pisses her off!

If your sister is a type 1 diabetic she CAN eat whatever she wants as long as she takes insulin to cover it. It's as safe as it would be for anyone else who eats what they want. She just has to inject insulin while those without diabetes do not. As long as she's keeping her glucose under control she has no other restrictions than anyone else. She faces the same health risks as anyone else who eats too much. Please don't take this the wrong way because I know you're just concerned, but if there's anything that drives me crazy it's what we call the "diabetic police"! Most of us are aware of what we should or shouldn't do, just like everyone else. If we chose to take care of ourselves or not, it's our decision. If she is not taking care of herself she will pay the consequences later. Diabetes is a disease that controls our lives much of the time. We like to do the rest on our own.

She doesn't take the dosage of insulin that her doctor prescribed? That's definitely not safe. My grandmother has diabetes. She used to eat whatever she wanted but it caught up with her. She has been the hospital 7 times in the last year. It's hard to convince a diabetic to stick to their diet. Just keep trying.

She is doing exactly what she should be doing! If she is in control (ie taking the approprate insulin dosage for her food), than it does not matter what she's eating. Lay off your sister in laws case. It makes A LOT of diabetics crazy.

Diabetes is usually treated through a combination of diet (low sugar), exercise and medications/insulin. Read here https://tr.im/5yEBx
Milder cases can be controlled with just diet an/or exercise while more severe cases require meds or insulin as well.

To be perfectly blunt, your sister-in-law is killing herself. I had a great aunt, great uncle, and close friend die doing just this.
All diabetics are on a strict diet - either counting carbs or balancing portion sizes. It is essential to maintain the appropriate balance. You cannot make up for a poor diet by taking extra insulin.

As long is she is taking the insulin to cover the carbs, it is no worse than you eating candy or ice-cream.

Ask her if she's happy with her choice of SUICIDE ?
She's crazy . Medication will only help if you follow your diet. You are not suppose to decide what to adjust your insulin levels too without consultation of a professional.
THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT SAFE.
By continously adjusting her insulin level she could develop resistance to the insulin then she's screwed.

as long as her sugars remain under control, she should be good. it takes a very confident diabetic to know precisely how much extra insulin to take for any specific food, good luck
