Lose weight if you are overweight, get some excercise, limit carbohydrates (found in starchy foods) and learn to read the labels on items before you buy. Eat more protein, vegetables and whole grains and fiber. By the way, eating sugary foods does NOT cause diabetes nor will eliminating them necessarily, by itself, reduce your blood glucose readings since the key is to reduce carbohydrates and any starch turns to carbs quickly.
