Sounds like a sinus problem. Nose, mouth and ears are all connected.
I know somebody who lost their sense of smell for over a year after a cold. Best see a Doctor.

It is possibly because you've also had an ear infection, or the tubes that link your nose/throat and ears have become blocked. Also the fluids in your head can increase the pressure, which makes ears pop.
If it's painful or you've lost some of your hearing for any amount of time, you should get it checked out by a doctor, they'll be able to tell you if you've got an infection, irritation etc and they can prescribe antibiotics if you need them.

If you are having trouble hearing after having a cold it most likely has to do with sinus blockage or drainage.
Sinus Blockage or drainage occurs in the mucas membranes which are conecting your nose, ear and throat. This blockage or drainage can create pressure that builds up behind the ears. When you body tries to equalize the pressure build up your ears feel like they are stuffed up.
You may experience them popping as they try to equalize pressure. Swallowing or chewing gum can help. Also try cough drops.
During a cold lymph node in the neck can become inflamed.

Everything is connected so like me you probably get an ear infection every time you get a cold. you could go to the doctors and they will give you antibiotics. when i get a cold i tend to put cotton wool in my ears, apparently it keeps them warm thus lowering the chance of ear infection. you could also hold your nose and try to sniff, this should release the pressure in your ears (that is what makes it sound as though you are listening to everything through water!!)

It sounds to me like you possibly have an ear infection or if you are like me you could have a heavy wax buildup in your ears that needs to be flushed out. If you swim you also could have what is called swimmers ear where water gets trapped in the ear canal.
