Not at all. The Italian cooking traditions range from pasta to polenta (which is cornmeal) to risotto rice. Northern Italian foods are more based on certain crops (such as rice and corn) and meat, while the south and the islands have many seafood and fish dishes. In the area of Rome, for instance, many of the local dishes are shared with some of the oldest Jewish culinary traditions (lamb, zucchini flowers, artichokes etc). Pizza is a typical dish of the south, which the food industry has turned into something which is v. different from the real thing.

Italian food is all the type of food native to Italy...

"The" italian food par excellence is pasta, any type of pasta....Spaghetti, lingüini, tagliatelli, maccheroni, ravioli, tortelloni, tortellini, farfalle, lasagna, canelloni, etc....

Each region has its own pasta sauce, which is distinctive, different and delicious.

There are many italian dishes worth trying and cooking: antipasti, osso bucco, chicken cacciatore, frittata, etc...

Also pizza, although the best pizzas are the New York and Chicago style rather than the italian ones. The "Calzone" in Italy is usually more interesting than the pizza!

And desserts such as Tiramisu, Zabaione and italian ice creams which are heavenly (I remember having rose petal ice cream in Florence during one visit...an unforgettable delight!) ...

Italian food is a whole world worth discovering!
