That just depends on what they are doing. Bi pass surgery can be done now for one or two vessels depending on the surgeon without bi-pass now. That means less risk and less time in the OR. I worked with some open heart patients and their surgeries would take anywhere between three to six hours normally.

What kind of procedure? Some procedures take a short time and others are quite long. Often in surgery, we work in relays, both the surgeon and the assistant surgeon spell each other for long proceudres, and for complicated surgeries, we sometimes have another team to take over. If you can imagine being bent over a patient for several hours, you can understand why, but there is also another reason and that is to stay sharp. We often allow residents to do anastamosis (joining the ends of blood vessels together) and other procedures both for training but also to spell the surgeon. I would be happy to give you an estimate of the time required but is it valvular, shunts, bi-pass etc? Have to be specific if you want a good answer.
