You should drink plenty of water. Your body dumps ketones in your urine to keep it out of your blood stream. When this happens your body is doing exactly what it's suppose to be doing but it is harsh on your kidneys. Once you have lowered your blood sugar and flushed out your kidneys with drinking water then you should stop spilling ketones but if you don't you need to go to the er and have them do an insulin drip. Most people can catch this pretty soon and take care of it at home but sometimes you need the help from a doc.

You have to make sure your blood glucose levels are not low by taking insulin (I assume you're type 1 diabetic).
Always keep a check on your blood glucose levels and have small meals or have a snack when you know you won't be eating for long time (like when you are busy with activities).
What happens is t hat if you have low blood glucose then your cells in your body dosen't get glucoes it needs so it would turn to your fat stores. Your brain only uses glucose. When there's not enough even for brain then fats are broken down to ketone bodies for your brain to use during time when glucose stores in your body is very limiting. That's how you get ketosis.
Then your body gets rid of ketones through urine and you breathe some out (acetone).

First, ketones are NOT caused by high glucose levels. They are a product of metabolized fat. When there's absence of insulin or extreme insulin resistance, the body is unable to use in glucose as fuel so it breaks down fat stores and muscle protein for fuel. acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate are ketone bodies with Beta-hydroxybutyrate being the main body produced. They are sythesized within the liver cells and then exported from the liver where other tissues, like those of the brain and cardiac muscle are break them down and use as energy. Acetone comes from decarboxylation of acetoacetate.
This process is also brought on by starvation, low carb diets, and exericise.

I've had ketoacidosis twice before and my doctors always tell me to drink lots of water. Water dilutes the ketones. Obviously, there also needs to be some sort of adjustment with the insulin.

if someone is in ketosis, they should go to the nearest er, placing a patient on an insulin drip (slowly!!!) is about the only way to get them out of it. I say the insulin drip slowly because if you lower the blood sugar too fast you get problems with the anonin gap.... and can cause many problems.
